Archive for Tom Cruise

GRADE: C+

How to start this review? The real reason I paid $16.50 to see this film on the true IMAX screen at the Minnesota Zoo was not to watch Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. No offense Tom Cruise. Even before this film started I was completely satisfied, because The Dark Knight Rises prologue left me in awe — I was literally holding my breath I was so enchanted watching the menacing Bane.

Anyway, Tom Cruise’s latest is an amusing action flick, but considering the brilliance of watching Tom Hardy as Bane for about seven minutes, I was let down by the film after that opening. Don’t get me wrong, the action in M:I – Ghost Protocol on the 70 mm (a normal film reel is 35mm) IMAX reel was captivating and worth the money — but this film is over two hours long, and at that length the marathon of action pieces is exhausting.

2011 Holiday Movie Guide

Hollywood is known for bunching releases in certain time frames that fit their strategy. January and February are the dumping grounds for forgetful flops. June through August are the glory days for blockbusters full of explosions and scantily clad ladies. September through December are the months where drama reigns king. But at the end of December, as Christmas rolls around, we get an onslaught of choices that are both entertaining and award-worthy. So, how do you pick the right one for you? Our 2011 Holiday Movie Guide, of course!

There are nine high-profile movies hitting theaters between December 16th and December 30th, along with four highly-touted limited release art films. We are aware some movies will still be in theaters from late November, but this guide is focused on those releasing in the last two weeks of December. In order to make this a little more focused, we’ll give you some sub-categories for exactly what we think each type of movie lover might want.

Combine Tom Cruise, Brad Bird, Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton, Josh Holloway, Simon Pegg, and Eminem, and what do you get? None of you would have guessed it if you didn’t see the title of the article and the banner above. Yes, of course I am referring to Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol being the sum of all those names listed. And honestly, I think the first trailer for this film is pretty sweet. All doubts I had about the movie up until this point have been dashed with this action-packed trailer. But you have to read on to see it.

Mission: Impossible 4 now has an official title. Believe it or not, it is not just a “4″ at the end of the title like the first three installments. Hot off the press is the official title for the film – Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. This news is far from the most interesting title to be released this week. Yesterday, Barrett posted the highly (and I mean highly) anticipated sequel to The Dark Knight will be titled The Dark Knight Rises. Though the Mission: Impossible title unveil is dwarfed by The Dark Knight Rises, in an effort to keep up with Mission: Impossible news I thought I would pass this important little nugget along.

The casting news surrounding the untitled fourth Mission: Impossible film has been a hot topic in weeks past. The film recently added an adversary to pit against the Tom Cruise-led team of operatives and also pulled Paula Patton into the lead female role. The newest addition to the cast comes from one of my favorite television actors Josh Holloway. Any LOST fan will surely recognize the 41 year-old instantly as Holloway played the rouge character Sawyer on the the hit ABC show that wrapped up this past year.

Well, its safe to say that Jeremy Renner, star of Oscar Gem The Hurt Locker, has ascended to the cusp of the Hollywood elite. Whether or not he will stay there is up to him. If I ventured a guess it would be that he will be around for awhile. Although I did not personally think The Hurt Locker was all that it was cracked up to be by the adoring critics (see my review here), Renner did a superb job with his unbalanced character William James. Apparently, I was not the only one to take notice of the talent this 39 year-old possesses.

In the past I have reported about pre-production news pertaining to Mission: Impossible 4, and now some things may have changed. Many of you know that Tom Cruise recently starred in the horrible Knight and Day with the aging Cameron Diaz. I saw the movie and I personally thought it was the worst film I have seen this year. I despised this movie so much mostly because the action sequences were so ridiculous they make Lindsey Lohan’s behavior seem clean cut. For my full review of the waste of space that was Knight and Day, check it out here.

This is a movie that I did not anticipate to be one of the better movies of the year, or even one that I would really enjoy. The previews alone left me skeptical. The aging stars Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz coupled with a ridiculous looking storyline gave me little reason to believe this could be anything but a bomb. Before walking in, I was all for giving this movie a chance. It had received luke warm reviews meaning I could go either way from enjoying to hating Knight and Day. Walking out, it was laughable what this movie tried to pull on audiences. This movie was not good.

You’ve no doubt been seen Tom Cruise’ appearance in Tropic Thunder back in 2008 as foul-mouthed mega-producer Les Grossman. You know, when he transformed his appearance into a bald, fat, hairy, rage-filled studio suit, screaming obscenities into his Blackberry while dancing ridiculously to “Get Back” by Ludacris. His surprising comedic cameo in the film even gained him a Golden Globe nomination. Then, you also probably saw his oddly-timed and over-used appearance at this year’s MTV Movie Awards a few days ago. So it’s obvious that this character has appeal and somewhat of an established fanbase. But is that enough for the Hollywood powers that be to make an actual movie based on this character? Well apparently, yes.

SpiderMan_logo-thumb-500x269-12364

This news is a couple weeks old, but I thought you’d like to hear my take. There have been new developments on some of the news I have reported on The Mash in recent months. Here are some quick tidbits on how the pre-production of the reboot of Spider-Man and Mission: Impossible 4 have evolved. First up, is the highly controversial reboot of the Spider-Man franchise. Most of you know by know that (500) Days of Summer director Marc Webb is set to take the reigns of the revamped Spidey franchise. Many think his successful work on the 2009 indie film will not translate when working on an action packed super hero movie like this.
