Shutter Island Leonardo DiCaprio

Shutter Island (A)

Where, oh where to begin? This review of Shutter Island is going to be broken down into two parts. The first part contains a spoiler-free discussion of the the acting and direction of the film. The second part is going to have a SPOILER WARNING, where I discuss the plot. This film depends on discretion as it is a psychological thriller containing many twists and turns. So if you haven’t seen the film yet, the first part should give you enough information on why you should see it, then after you see it, come on back and read my reaction to the story.

This is why I love Conan. The humor he brings to The Tonight Show is so ridiculous and loves to highlight the absurd. Just a couple days ago, I posted the new trailer for Martin Scorsese’s upcoming thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Shutter Island. I gushed, in great detail, on how amazing the film looks and how excited I am to see it. If you haven’t yet, please watch the trailer first before watching this clip. In his opening monologue last night, Conan talked about the “new Martin Scorsese film,” mentioning that Scorsese is one of his favorite directors and said the film looks awesome. He was, however, “surprised by the title of the film” as it does not really fit with its serious nature. Check it out.

Okay…deep breath…I’ve been watching this trailer over and over for the past half-hour and the hairs all over my body have been stiff as needles the entire time. This is the most insanely intense, creepy, chilling, badass trailer I’ve seen in years. This movie has officially been CATAPULTED into my Top 3 must-sees this year. WHOA! In case you don’t know what movie I’m talking about, it’s called Shutter Island, the latest collaboration between the dream team of Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese. The film is adapted from the 2003  best-selling novel of the same title, written by Dennis Lehane. It is set in 1954, U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leo) is investigating the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane and is presumed to be hiding on the remote Shutter Island. But this is no ordinary hospital for the criminally insane.

Empire Magazine has the exclusive first released photo of Leonardo DiCaprio, Michelle Williams and director Martin Scorsese on the set of Shutter Island.

The film, as with every Scorsese project, boasts an impeccable supporting cast including: Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, the lovely Emily Mortimer and Rorshach himself, Jackie Earle Haley.

Based on the novel Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane, it is an atmospheric psychological thriller set in a 1950s asylum for the criminally insane. It’s 1954, and up-and-coming U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels (Leo) is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Shutter Island’s Ashecliffe Hospital. He’d been gunning for an assignment on the island for reasons of his own — but before long he wonders whether he hasn’t been brought there as part of a twisted plot by hospital doctors whose radical treatments range from unethical to illegal to downright sinister.

Teddy’s code-breaking skills soon provide a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him access to records he suspects would break the case wide open. As a hurricane cuts off communication with the mainland, more dangerous criminals “escape” in the confusion, and the puzzling, improbable clues proliferate, Teddy begins to doubt everything — his memory, his partner, even his own sanity.

Couldn’t ask for anything better from Leo and Marti, two of the best filmmakers to ever grace Hollywood. Shutter Island (poster left) is their fourth film together. I’m also very happy to see Michelle Williams in a mainstream film with obvious quality; the first such film since Heath Ledger’s death. Shutter Island opens everywhere October 2nd.
