So it’s no secret that Iron Man 2 was going to be an inevitable box-office smash, which it proved last week by bursting into theaters with an impressive $130 million opening weekend. But the real test of it’s box-office potential is ultimately how it would perform the the subsequent weeks in theaters, as a new big-budget movie is set to be released almost every week throughout this summer movie season. Well, Stark & Co. have held their ground by fending off it’s major competitor this weekend, Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood.

ROBIN HOOD (C+)

The Wolfman comes to mind when settling down to write this review. After evaluating my feelings of the prequel tale of Robin Hood, before his legendary days as the Prince of Thieves, I realized I left the theater less happy than walking in. I rated The Wolfman higher than this movie almost strictly on the basis that I was  more disappointed from Robin Hood, expecting greatness, but only receiving mediocrity.

It’s been awhile since we’ve had a new cinematic telling of the historic Robin Hood tale. The most well-known has to be 1991′s Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves starring Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman and Christian Slater. Now it’s being re-imagined again, but this time Russell Crowe (photo right, in the first production photo) will be portraying the Sherwood Forest-dwelling outlaw with a heart of gold. What’s really great about this re-telling, and probably expected, is his continued partnership with his long-time “Master & Commander,” hall-of-fame director Ridley Scott. The two have an obvious an incredible personal and professional rapport, having already done four films together: Gladiator, A Good Year, American Gangster & Body of Lies. Another fantastic addition to this new Robin Hood journey is the casting of Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian. Blanchett is a an Oscar-winning actress and multiple nominee. I’ll go so bold to say that I consider her to probably be the best living actress. She’s also hugely underrated in regards to her beauty, which is just wrong. The film, simply titled Robin Hood, hits theaters a year from now next May. Source: USA Today

Peter Jackson pretty much changed Hollywood forever after bringing The Lord of The Rings books to life on the big screen. Now he’s on a mission to bring another beloved piece of literature to life with The Lovely Bones. The book of the same title was released in 2002, written by author Alice Sebold. It is the story of a teenage girl who, after being brutally raped and murdered, watches from heaven as her family and friends go on with their lives, while she herself comes to terms with her own death. The novel received a great deal of critical praise and became an instant bestseller. Pretty heavy stuff Mr. Jackson. Below is the first released photo that gives us a glimpse of what Jackson’s interpretation of heaven will look like, courtesy of Empire Magazine:

An undeniably intriguing concept to go along with an A-list cast. Jackson has Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz and Susan Sarandon portraying the grieving  family of the deceased young girl, who is being played by Saorise Ronan from Atonement. Veteran character actor Stanley Tucci has the task of playing the murdering rapist, who has to live with the guilt and pain of his disgusting and evil crime.

USA Today has the first look at Mr. Tucci’s pain and misery as he sulks in the dark (left). Needless to say, this is definitely not going to be the family comedy of the year. It actually sounds like it could be the most serious and emotional drama ever created….by humans. We’ll just have to wait and see.
