As we have all seen over the past few years, vampires are freakin’ everywhere.  Television, books, movies, there is no escaping the bloodsucking fad and that has some people out there really peeved.  I cannot say that I blame them when I see most of the schlock that is coming out with vamps as moody, whiney emo kids.  However, every craze has its silver lining and for the vampire fad that came a few years ago with a little Swedish film called Let the Right One In.

As many of my friends know my filmic interests are not bound by our national borders.  In fact, four of my ten favorite films listed on my Movie Mash profile are foreign films.  One of my favorite countries for cinema with subtitles is South Korea.  Pretty much anything done by director Chan-wook Park is bound for my DVD collection.  To name a few of his amazing works, please check out Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, Lady Vengeance and Thirst.  The first three films are all from Park’s Vengeance Trilogy, three movies connected by betrayal and lust for revenge.  The last one is about a priest turned vampire who must grapple with his new hunger for blood and an attractive young woman.  If giant mutant fish are more your style, check out The Host, a monster movie that has something to say.  The Chaser was my most recent viewing; a detective turned pimp has to find the guy who has been killing his girls.

Look out for this young lady, as she is about to blow up all over your face in the next couple years. Deadline is reporting today (via Collider) that the gorgeous and talented Olivia Wilde has accepted the lead female role in The Change Up, alongside Ryan Reyonlds and Jason Bateman. In the film, a married man (Bateman) switches bodies with his “slacker bestfriend” (Reynolds) and hilarity ensues, of course. Wilde will be playing Bateman’s co-worker, who apparently has a pivitol role in the body-switching incident. At first glance you might want to dismiss this project with a “seriously? Another one of these?” reactions, but once you see the creative peeps behind the project, I think you’ll be on board.

The Top 5 Movies of the Summer

Posted by: | Comments (0)

The summer movie season is officially over now and I am back in school attending classes at the University of Minnesota. In light of this depressing fact, I thought it would be appropriate to give a run down of my top five movies from the summer. I can’t say this summer movie season was a disappointment by any means, but the number of quality movies did seem less than usual. However, the amazing movies featured on my list made this summer season a success in my book. I’m convinced picking Eclipse as the best movie of the summer will surely stir up some debate, but wait to argue until you read the article. So, let’s check out my top movies of the summer after the break.

While I know it is impossible for every person to appreciate any particular movie, it is quite distressing seeing people bash quality ones. Inception of course has been welcomed by a mostly positive critic and audience reception, but there are still people out there who are going to take their shots just because they can’t let themselves enjoy something liked by the mainstream. We saw very similar treatment to Cameron’s Avatar and also The Dark Knight in 2008. Like I said, I know not everyone is going to love some of these movies like I did, or most critics, or most of the public. I can take someone making legitimate claims on why they didn’t like the movie or shortcomings they felt it featured. But for someone to go out of their way to bash or claim “the movie was terrible, or confusing,” (when all you have to do is clearly pay attention!) is just a ploy to get attention. Well, people talking like this, who should not be left in a small room with me, have my attention. Hit the jump to see this bash on Inception.

Rant: Theft at the Theater

Posted by: | Comments (3)

In this stale economy, it’s difficult to find businesses blatantly ripping off their customers. However, you can look no further than the film industry and its recent hike in movie ticket prices, again, to witness a true example of corporate greed incarnate. The theaters owned by the Regal Entertainment Group, AMC, and Cinemark Holdings all increased their ticket prices starting May 26th. The price increase is varied depending on the market.

Tron Legacy

It’s been several days since this was unveiled to the world, but I needed some time to gather my thoughts. If you saw Alice in Wonderland this past weekend, you got to see the breathtaking new trailer for Disney’s other upcoming 3-D baby, Tron Legacy. The first footage we saw of Tron Legacy was way back this past summer when Disney premiered those three minutes of footage at Comic-Con. That clip didn’t show much, but was just supposed to get people talking, which it did. But man, this new trailer has got people SCREAMING for December to hurry the hell up already.

The Hurt Locker Oscars

Where in the hell did this from? After getting no love from The Golden Globes or the SAG Awards, The Hurt Locker came out of left field to win six Academy Awards including Best Director (Kathryn Bigelow) and Best Picture. I thought it was a solid film, but NO WAY did it deserve Best Picture. Avatar and Inglourious Basterds were the only worthy nominees for the biggest award of the night in my opinion. I guess the Academy is still too conservative and/or short-sighted to give props to any film that wins big at the box-office.

Browsing the internet a few weeks back I stumbled upon some very interesting Star Wars news. The first bit of reading involved George Lucas’s comments following his screening of Avatar. Lucas was impressed with the magnitude of what James Cameron was able to accomplish with the project and the integration of the third dimension (via Access Hollywood):

I’m happy it’s so successful, and worked very well in 3-D, haven’t been a big fan of 3-D, but that movie definitely improves in (the field of) 3-D. We’ve been looking for years and years and years of trying to take ‘Star Wars’ and put it in 3-D. But, [the] technology hasn’t been there. We’ve been struggling with it, but I think this will be a new impetus to make that happen.

Megan Fox

I am sure many of you could not have missed the Megan Fox Super Bowl commercial that featured the bombshell actress in the bathtub. Aside from Megan wearing nothing but bubbles the commercial actually made me laugh quite a bit. It was definitely one of my favorite Super Bowl ads in what I would consider a pretty weak picking as far as awesome new commercials go. My second favorite would have to be the little black boy protecting his cheesy snacks with authority (Keep your hands of my momma, keep your hands off my Doritos).
