It’s no secret that my favorite movie from 2011 was Alexander Payne’s The Descendants. Not only was it my favorite, but the film also took home awards for Best Picture and Best Actor (George Clooney) at the Golden Globes this past Sunday. If you haven’t made time for this film, take my recommendation, as well as the recommendation from judging body of the Golden Globes, and get out and see The Descendants. The purpose of this post is not simply to rant about the greatness of this film, but to spotlight the cinematography and the editing from the project. After the jump you can check out a behind the scenes look, which features interviews with members of the production crew.

Just to keep all those in desperate need of something new from The Dark Knight Rises I thought I’d pass along some photos that will be in the next issue of Entertainment Weekly. For now, this is all we have — don’t be so ungrateful, we just got a new trailer and the prologue barely a month ago. Besides the new photos, Christopher Nolan recently responded to the critics calling out Tom Hardy’s dialogue as Bane indecipherable. Hit the jump to check it all out.

It has been awhile since anything new has come out regarding The Amazing Spider-Man, so I had to post when I saw the great spread of new stills from production. This type of marketing by Sony is brilliant — just when we start to forget about the 2012 reboot, they release more pictures, posters, or information about the movie to remind us the Summer is not far off. Hit the jump to check out the lot.

For those that don’t know, many successful films of past years are getting on this 3D wave Hollywood has been riding for the past three years. The Lion King 3D, Finding Nemo 3D, Titanic 3D, Top Gun 3D, and of course Star Wars 3D, are all being re-released to a theater near you in the third dimension. The first poster has just been released for Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace 3D, and I have to say it really struck me. Not for its boldness or resemblance to the classic Star Wars posters, but for how different it is than the rest. It’s also missing three central characters from the film. Hit the jump to see the full spread.

The question posed above might not be serious, but the video after the jump has your answer. Star Wars might not have worked with a black guy voicing C-3PO, but it would have been a whole lot funnier — that is clearly shown after watching the ghetto droid talk back to Uncle Owen. Hit the jump to see.

Sure the Emmys were on Sunday, but believe it or not, I didn’t watch them. I have better things to do with my time, like wash my hair. I am not usually one to sit down for three hours and soak in all the glamor, stars, and general BS in those shows. I’m more of a, ‘give me the highs and lows’ guy — who wore what, who fell on stage, and most importantly, who won? Of course there is some humor here and there, and this is an example of that. I was led to a very funny skit staged on the set of The Office, but features characters from many other hit shows like: Breaking Bad, Parks and Rec, and 30 Rock. Hit the jump to check it out.

After the jump you can catch a glimpse of the first teaser poster for Paranormal Activity 3. I also included the trailer which came out this Summer. The film is set to hit theaters October 21 and is directed by the duo who produced Catfish. Anyone looking for a creepy film, check out Catfish. This third chapter brings the story back to when the two sisters were just children. Hit the jump to find out more.

I love the Internet. Sarah talked earlier about how she loves to watch short webisodes online, and I’m here to admit I have a tendency to spend hours browsing sites like 9gag.com and comixed checking out all the different creative pictures that are constantly surfacing on their home pages. Whether the creators are commenting on films, television, politics, or just life in general, you don’t have to go far to find a picture that will make you smile. Hit the jump to see some of my favorites.

The Future According to Film

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Could our future mirror one similar to the image above? A Guy Fawkes masked mass of citizens rebelling against an oppressive government? Graphic designer Michael Hobson created an inforgraphic putting on full display the way the future has been represented in films and some television over the years. Of course the creators are just manufacturing their own take on what the future could be like — but what if it were to all come true? The infographic features movies like I, Robot, 12 Monkeys, V for Vendetta, Terminator: Salvation, Minority Report, Serenity, Aliens, Robocop, Avatar, Equilibrium, and so much more. The progressing timeline seen after the jump doesn’t seem to bode well for us humans.

This is pretty damn awesome. I think one of the coolest parts of the film-making process is when actors improvise because they feel something authentic and genuine might work better for a scene than what’s written in the script, or something unexpected happens that causes the scene to veer from what’s on the page; but then ends up being even better than what was originally intended because the actors were into their characters, into the story and movie magic was the result. That’s why I absolutely adore this video created by YouTube user mewlist, who has put together the 25 Greatest Unscripted Scenes in Films. Check it out after the break.
