Archive for Peter Jackson

This post is simple enough. Back in March rumored titles for Peter Jackson’s upcoming Hobbit films were leaked online. But were they legit? Now, we know for a fact the rumored titles were indeed correct, confirmed by a press release today. We learned from Warner Bros. the first film would be titled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and the follow up will get the title The Hobbit: There and Back. The first will hit theaters December 14th, 2012 and the second a year later on December 13th, 2013.

Great news right? Both films dropping in the Christmas season should equate to high box office earnings — consider slapping the LOTR taglines on this film and imagine the profits — especially if Jackson pumps out the product we all expect. If he does, could this mean more Oscar gold for the acclaimed director? Fitting release date for both films right, and almost exactly a year apart? Hopefully the Mayans are wrong about 2012 being the end so we don’t get screwed short of seeing these complimentary films.

Man, this project has gone through the proverbial ringer over the past couple months. Last month when we reported the announcement of the official release dates of both Hobbit films (the prequel series to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, based on the Tolkien books), it seemed like everything was set and ready to go. Peter Jackson was executive producing and co-writing the scripts with then director Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth). Then, because of the massive delays during pre-production, del Toro had to gracefully bow out from directing the films because those delays were impeding on his other prior obligations as a filmmaker. Then there was the short-lived rumor that District 9 director Neil Blomkamp was “in negotiations” to take over, with said rumor being confirmed false soon following. Now, Deadline is reporting (via FirstShowing) that Jackson is currently in final negations to return to The Shire once again, and direct both Hobbit films.

Lovely Bones Max

In this edition of Trailer Trash MASH, as the headline says, we have some sickness and some not-so sickness. I’ll start off with the sickness as the not-so sickness contains some inappropriate descriptions for the main page. Anyway, first up we have the latest epic vision from Oscar-winner and Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson. This is Jackson’s first film since 2005′s King Kong and tackles much heavier and more emotional themes than Orcs and giant apes; that being the murder of a young girl and the mysteries of the afterlife. The film is The Lovely Bones and  I posted some of the first pics that were released way back in April. The best-selling novel of the same title was released in 2002, written by author Alice Sebold. It is the story of a teenage girl who, after being brutally raped and murdered, watches from heaven as her family and friends go on with their lives, and her father (Wahlberg) who desperately tries to track down the killer.

cameron and jackson

This is why I love Comic-Con. It’s the only massive event where fans get to interact with the filmmakers and actors that they love and admire. Some take this definition of interaction and admiration to whole new levels. At the “Visionaries” panel over the weekend, iconic directors Peter Jackson and James Cameron got together in front of nearly 7,000 fans to discuss and debate the future of film. It started off quite nice. Both directors cited their inspirations. Jackson mentioned that when he’s “creatively blocked,” he watches Martin Scrosese’s Good Fellas and Casino for ambition re-fueling and guidance. Then, suddenly, things went terribly wrong.

district-9-poster-usa_mid1If you scroll down The Movie Mash main page, you’ll see a mash that I posted last week with the chilling new teaser-trailer for District 9, which premiered in front of X-Men Origins: Wolverine over the weekend. I elaborated as best I could on the available plot information, but it is apparent that Sony Pictures is slowly releasing bits of info. about this film, creating a Cloverfield-style “what the hell is it?” vibe, to ultimately heighten anticipation and curiosity.

Alex Billington over at FirstShowing.net picked up the latest issue of Rolling Stone, which has an extended look at newly revealed plot details. It seems to only be available in the hard copy issue because it’s no where to be found on  RollingStone.com. Their website is actually quite amateur for such a major publication BTW. Regardless, Mr. Billington was kind enough to take a photograph of the issue and upload it. Check it out.
