Okay, I admit, I’ve been on a Joss Whedon kick recently.  I just finished watching two of his best shows (Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly) and started up Angel.  Joss is a master of his craft.  His stories are great, his characters are deep, and everything looks amazing.  I really hope he comes back to television again because I’m running out of shows!  But, if he decides to stick with movies, it would be nice if he gave us a few more web comics.  Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is some of the most fun you can have watching… anything.

As you may recall, I recently posted an article about the wonders of animated films. Not Disney or Pixar 3D but more old fashion, hand drawn animation. As sort of a happy medium, I present to you The Secret of Kells, a 2009 French/Belgian/Irish production seeped in Celtic lore. It follows young Brendan, the future abbot of Kells, as he works to complete a book which will enlighten mankind and hopefully save his home from an attacking Viking army. While gathering supplies to make ink he finds Aisling, a fairy with knowledge about the forest that is vital to his mission. The film has the same older aesthetic that I spoke of, but still utilizes computer animation to tell Brendan’s story.

Everyone is familiar with the many culprits of stress: work, school, family, relationships, the holidays, and the never ending list of things to accomplish. Stress can be grueling, and at times, miserable.  Whatever your origins of stress may be, it is important to understand the serious health factors that accompany stress. Stress is doing more damage to the modern human body than you may think. Netflix This: ‘Monk’

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Former officer, Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub), suffers from severe Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. He brushes his teeth using steaming water, owns several copies of exactly the same suit, and never leaves the home without a pack of sanitary wipes. While his brilliant mind and microscopic vision of crime scenes help him solve murders that the police cannot, his long list of phobias provide constant comic relief throughout the show.

If you are a Tim Roth fan, you need to see The Legend of 1900. The film was directed and written by the Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore. He wrote the script based off the theater monologue Novecento, by Alessandro Baricco. It happens to be the first movie he ever directed in English, so if subtitles scare you, no need to run away from this one. The Legend of 1900 is magical on an array of levels. The acting is impeccable, the story is captivating, and the soundtrack is beautifully composed.

Just released last Friday to consumers for home consumption (DVD, Netflix, etc.) was the box office hit How to Train Your Dragon. Surprisingly, the film is an animated gem from a production company not named Pixar and was one of the best reviewed movies of the year. I don’t align myself with critics who call this movie award worthy considering it is only the third best animated movie of the year in my book behind Toy Story 3 and Despicable Me. Even without placing this movie amongst the top two animated movies of the year, I still recommend people who have not experienced How to Train Your Dragon giving it a view.

Netflix This: ‘The Critic’

This one is for my peeps.  Are you a movie buff?  Fanboy?  Film snob?  Message board troll?  The guy/gal with all the movies in your circle of friends?  I know how you feel.  I fall into a few of these categories myself.  More than a few times I have been chastised by friends and relatives because of my views on some “classic” movie.  Dumb and Dumber?  Hilarious! Good?  Not by a long shot.  Commence calling me names.  Inception? (Here I know I am walking on thin ice because most of The Movie Mash staff loves this film.) I think it is not even close to as smart as it could have been and was simply a well done summer action flick.  I expect my car to be in flames by the end of the day.  So, for all of my fellow overly critical critics, those who champion expressions like “Eh, it was okay,” or “I wouldn’t say good,” or the classic “It stinks,” I present to you, for your viewing pleasure, The Critic!

There have been a number of documentaries made about the legendary band, The Doors. What sets When You’re Strange apart, is the impact it has on contemporary viewers. Director Tom DiCillo has captured the mood and essence of what made the band great. The compilation of original concert footage and interviews sends the audience back to the 1960′s. The documentary is not only informative, but also appeals on an entertaining level. Whether you have an interest in the music produced by The Doors, or want to know more about Jim Morrison’s erratic behavior, When You’re Strange brings you up close and personal with the band’s ride in history.

Netflix This: ‘Hoarders’

There’s a reason that your mother always told you to clean your room. She had no desire to look at your disgusting space and wanted to avoid slaving over your messes. Most of all, she wanted you to pick up, clean up and throw out unused items to avoid ending up on the reality TV documentary, Hoarders.

When the “King of Pop” died, so did a fully prepared farewell tour titled, This Is It. For many, this meant a sad and unfortunate ticket refund. However, a refund seems insignificant when you think about the people who had been working on the tour’s production. This Is It, sets aside the personal life of the beyond eccentric individual. It brings to the forefront a side of Michael “you have never seen before” by highlighting his professionalism as a hard working entertainer. Unlike many documentaries, This Is It does not include heavy commentary on what happened behind the scenes. Instead, the documentary lets the production process unravel in front of you as if you are watching practices and rehearsals firsthand. To anyone watching This Is It, it quickly becomes apparent that the world was sold short a show of remarkable talent and innovations unlike any other production to date.
