Archive for Matthew Vaughn

GRADE: A

I am a diehard X-Men fan and have been since my days as a youth watching the animated television series religiously on Saturday mornings. To this point, I have not been overly impressed by any of the other X-Men films. The first was ok, the second more of the same, the third was awful, and X-Men: Origins Wolverine was a let down. The previous films never really focused on the humanity of the characters; it was always more about what they could do as mutants. They all pretend to be character driven at points, but slowly give in to showy visual effects and an excess of mutants to keep the story moving along. X-Men: First Class ignored almost everything from the first four films and went its own route for the ‘reboot’ prequel. Suffice to say, this was easily the best X-Men yet.

More ‘Oldboy’ Remake Rumors

Posted by: | Comments (2)

The man pictured above just found out about the Oldboy remake.

Speculation abounds, and has for some time. Ever since I first saw Oldboy there has been vague speculation about a remake. Speculation that makes fanboys shudder and foreign film fanciers cry in a corner. Oldboy could get remade… in English. Spotty reports have come in (via Slashfilm) basically saying the same things that we have known before. Remake possible, Steven Spielberg possibly at the helm with Will Smith possibly starring.  The only new stuff we got is that Matthew Vaughn or Danny Boyle could pick it up if Spielberg decides to pass and that Mandate Pictures, a small company owned by Lionsgate, is showing interest in a script by The Cell, I Am Legend and Thor scribe Mark Protosevich.

In the effort to stay on top of the X-Men: First Class news I would of course have to report the film’s Producer Bryan Singer commenting on the newest X-Men installment. Most current news about the film has revolved around the casting collage taking take place the past few weeks climaxing most recently with the addition of January Jones to the cast. The most insight into the upcoming movie however, comes with Singer’s comments in an interview with AICN that you can see summarized below. As you could derive from my first X-Men: First Class article, I speculate Aaron Johnson playing the role of Scott Summers, aka Cyclops. From Singer’s breakdown of the movie he clearly states that Cyclops will not be in the film. I think this is the prominent statement from the interview.

Well, my hope that Alice Eve would be cast as Emma Frost in Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class has been crushed. It was announced via Deadline that January Jones will be playing the character. My disappointment gets worse as I hear Jones has talent on the hit show Mad Men, but appears to be type-cast into her role as Betty Draper on the AMC program. Playing Emma Frost requires a bit a sass, something many devoted movie and comic fans do not think Jones can pull off. Sadly, I have not seen  . But it is on my list of shows to watch, so sheath your pestering of my failure to watch the show.

A whole slew of news has recently dropped regarding X-Men: First Class. We have know for a while now that violence extraordinaire Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, Layer Cake) will be in the director seat for this X-Men project profiling the younger versions of Magneto and Professor Xavier. This movie will feature the two men before they were defined by circumstances that caused them to go in two very different directions in human/mutant relations. Erik Lensherr, or Magneto as he is known, takes the route of mutant superiority. Charles Xaiver decidedly chooses to believe that humans and mutants can live in harmony and founded the School for Gifted Youngsters which in turn helps formulate the X-Men.

So Kick-Ass is obviously an awesome film, but it didn’t do as well at the box-office as many would have hoped. So far, it has only grossed just over $43 million domestically and just over $73 million worldwide; surely not taking the movie world by storm. But regardless of its money-making ability, it looks as though a sequel is indeed in the works. Forces of Geek (via Slashfilm) has revealed a recent press release for the upcoming issue of CLiNT magazine, a joint venture between Kick-Ass scribe Mark Millar and Titan Magazines, saying that Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall will begin production in 2011 for a 2012 theatrical release.

Kick Ass HitGirl

Kick-Ass (A-)

Any fan of violence will be right at home sitting down to watch this movie. The theme of the movie is practically violence. The violence is not only prominent, but it’s graphic. Watching the best character Hit-Girl dissect the movie’s pawns is entertainment in itself. The violence is so breathtaking and fun to watch it brought me back to the first time I saw Kill Bill Vol. 1. If you like violence in movies, see Kick-Ass immediately.
