After months and months of trailers, interviews, set photos and posters, Thor finally hit theaters on Friday. Not knowing much about the Thor mythology, I was cautiously optimistic about the film; because a) it was directed by Shakespearean thespian Kenneth Branagh, who until now, hasn’t forayed into directing action blockbusters with huge scope. And b) I was fearful that Marvel’s need to intertwine the storyline with next year’s The Avengers would hinder the script. I was wrong. Thor is an absolute blast.

A BIG day for Marvel fans. First comes the news (via Deadline) that Shane Black, director of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and writer of all the Lethal Weapon movies has been tapped by Marvel execs to direct Iron Man 3. Unfortunate news that Jon Favreau won’t be returning to finish his trilogy, but apparently the director grew tired of the property and has now moved on to direct Magic Kingdom for Disney.

‘Thor’ Trailer Drops

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Just a few days ago we posted the first official teaser poster for Marvel’s Thor, and an initial negative reaction of the film’s 3D version of the trailer that can be seen in front of Tron: Legacy this week. That trailer is now officially online in HD and I am cautiously optimistic. I don’t know anything about Thor, so I’m not going to try and breakdown the inaccuracies from the comic-book, and what should/should not be in this trailer as a result. I’m just going to post it for your viewing pleasure, and let us know your thoughts.

News on Marvel’s 2011 lineup has been pretty quiet as of late, but today we’ve got a few tidbits from Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming big screen adaption of Thor. First up, we have a glimpse of the first official teaser poster to be released from Marvel for the film, which is, well, pretty underwhelming. Considering the blockbuster status and Avengers hype, it could have been much more exciting and noteworthy. We also have a reaction from someone who has seen the upcoming official trailer  for Thor, slated to drop soon. The reaction? Not so good.

Marc Webb, director of the upcoming Spider-Man reboot, is certainly shaking things up with his casting and script decisions for the superhero flick; which is a good thing. Webb shocked the world when he announced Andrew Garfield would be suiting up as Spidey back in July. In another surprising move, Webb has decided that the love interest for Peter Parker in his Spider-Man film will NOT be Mary Jane Watson; Parker’s high-school crush/eventual GF that has been a staple character in the comic-books, live-action films and animated shows for decades. So right now, the part of  “love interest” is up for grabs, with some notable up-and-comers surfacing as front-runners, including: Lily Collins (The Blind Side), Ophelia Lovibond (London Boulevard), Teresa Palmer (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice), Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later) and the lovely Emma Roberts (Valentine’s Day).

Well, my hope that Alice Eve would be cast as Emma Frost in Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class has been crushed. It was announced via Deadline that January Jones will be playing the character. My disappointment gets worse as I hear Jones has talent on the hit show Mad Men, but appears to be type-cast into her role as Betty Draper on the AMC program. Playing Emma Frost requires a bit a sass, something many devoted movie and comic fans do not think Jones can pull off. Sadly, I have not seen  . But it is on my list of shows to watch, so sheath your pestering of my failure to watch the show.

A whole slew of news has recently dropped regarding X-Men: First Class. We have know for a while now that violence extraordinaire Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, Layer Cake) will be in the director seat for this X-Men project profiling the younger versions of Magneto and Professor Xavier. This movie will feature the two men before they were defined by circumstances that caused them to go in two very different directions in human/mutant relations. Erik Lensherr, or Magneto as he is known, takes the route of mutant superiority. Charles Xaiver decidedly chooses to believe that humans and mutants can live in harmony and founded the School for Gifted Youngsters which in turn helps formulate the X-Men.

Don’t whip out the diapers yet. While the title of this post may make you crap your pants with excitement, it’s nothing but a teasing teaser that teases. Remember, The Avengers movie doesn’t come out for another one year and seven months, they won’t even start shooting for another six months or so. But, during Comic-Con a couple weeks ago, Marvel premiered this teaser trailer after bringing out the entire Avengers cast on stage, and it is now online for nerdgasms to initiate. The teaser simply consists of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, the wise elder of this superhero property, doing a dramatic voice-over as The Avengers logo slowly appears from the shadows, and is then obliterated by a blinding light. Hmmmm. Dark Knight teaser much?

the avengers

Okay, so let’s do a quick re-cap on these two projects, shall we? So remember a couple months ago, when we reported that Marvel was test-screening for Captain America? Well, those who were on the “short-list” ended up not panning out and the studio execs went with Chris Evans. A very solid choice, indeed. Then, in unfortunate timing, IESB reported on April Fool’s Day, that creator of of the short-lived, but cult favorite TV series Firefly, Joss Whedon, was the leading contender to direct the epic culmination of Marvel’s movie universe, The Avengers. That report was later all but confirmed, and now some more tidbits have surfaced about his involvement with that project and The First Avenger: Captain America.
