Archive for Johnny Depp

GRADE: C

A Tim Burton movie starring Johnny Depp? Say what? Of course I’m kidding, because this is not the first time this pair has collaborated with one another — not to mention another Burton regular Danny Elfman scoring Dark Shadows and Helena Bonham Carter also being in the mix. All the familiar sights and sounds were there, but towards the end I was just hoping it would end quickly. All the cards on the table, I am not a big fan of Tim Burton anyway. He’s just not my type of storyteller. Even aside from this obvious bias, Dark Shadows is not a very good movie — most of all because I could not buy into or care for Depp’s Barnabas Collins, his plight, or any of the other supporting cast members.

The first trailer for Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows came out last night. As I was about to watch it, I was not excited at all for another Johnny Depp, Helena B. Carter, Tim Burton flick. But I watched anyways because I wanted to get a feel for this movie and gauge if it was going to suck. I was pleasantly surprised. It looks very good.

For those that didn’t get the reference, “Bat country” is a line from one of my favorite movies that features the best performance of Johnny Depp’s career; that being his portrayal of legendary drug-fueled journalist Hunter S. Thompson in Terry Gilliam’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas back in 1998. So I am so ecstatic that Depp is returning to that character, at least a version of it, in the adaptation of Thompson’s memoir The Rum Diary – which chronicles Thompson’s boozefest shenanigans in Puerto Rico in the 1960′s while, of course, on assignment – told through his alter-ego “Paul Kemp.” Check out the trailer after the break.

First off, if you do see this film, do not see it in 3D. “Pirates” in the third dimension is another ploy to steal more money from you. The 3D added nothing to this film whatsoever. This project was surprisingly shot in 3D on RED cameras, but the final product resembled more of a hasty money gouging process than an immersive environment. The people look like polished cutouts — just a way to get you to spend an extra 3 bucks at the theater. The unmentionable 3D factors into my distaste for this film.

The critic in the film community who called this “pirates” the best yet, is the worst film critic in the world. Not one of the sequels in this series has held a candle to the original. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is better than the atrocious third chapter, but that isn’t saying much. This fourth film is more of the same from the three previous films, but is that really a good thing? I say no, but I will leave that for you to decide once you sit down and watch Sparrow on the high seas yet again.

With Pixar and Dreamworks dominating the animated landscape over the last decade, it’s refreshing to have other studios adding their unique visions to the family adventure genre, such as last year’s Despicable Me from Universal, and most recently Rango from Nickelodeon – who hasn’t released a prominent animated feature in some time. I was pleasantly surprised by Rango, starring Johnny Depp, as it is a very original, quirky, entertaining and visually fantastic animated adventure that should please both kids and adults alike.

“Eh.” That’s what I muttered under my breath as I left a screening of The Tourist earlier this week. With the A++++ headlining  duo of Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, I was expecting this to be at least “not-your-average spy thriller.” But alas, that is not the case. The Tourist is boring, forgettable and a film that I am glad that I didn’t pay to see. There is no “well, they needed a paycheck” rationale for Depp and Jolie, so the fact that they wasted five or so months of their time with this film really baffles me. As the headline of this review suggests, it’s a waste of their talents and our time.

With Edward Scissorhands’ release two decades ago, emerged an unstoppable partnership. Since 1990, Johnny Depp and Tim Burton have created beautifully dark productions that never disappoint audiences. Now, the artistic duo is teaming up again to film Dark Shadows, scheduled for release in 2013. The kicker? Even Depp and Burton have jumped on the vampire bandwagon.

You’d think that the first teaming up of THE, not “two of the,” THE two biggest movie stars on the planet in a highly-anticipated action-thriller, the first trailer should generate automatic mind explosions of awesomeness. But alas, here we are with the first “meh” trailer for The Tourist, starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t look bat at all, and I will surely see it in theaters; it does, however, look like every other cliche, fish out of water, identity-shifting, European location-spanning, romantic-thriller, with a dab of comedy…that we’ve all seen a thousand times.

Public Enemies (A)

“We having too good a time today, we ain’t thinking about tomorrow.” John Dillinger  says when proposed that he should “plan ahead,” simply and bluntly explaining his way of life.  Public Enemies is of course the semi-biopic of the legendary American bank-robber of the early 1930s, John Dillinger. The film is directed by the great Michael Mann (Heat, The Insider, Collateral) and stars Johnny Depp as the conflicted anti-hero. I have to say right off the bat  this film is the best drama of 2009 and one of the best movies of the year. It is rich, engrossing, dramatic, beautiful, suspenseful, with great performances and badass action. It is quite simply, a great movie.

alice 2

What else would you expect? Director Tim Burton has created some of the weirdest, trippiest, bizarre and visually- stunning worlds in cinematic history, but it looks like his newest film is going to take the cake.  It’s been in the making for some time, but USA Today finally has our first glance at Burton’s interpretation of Alice In Wonderland. The featured concept art photo above is of Alice, played by relative newcomer Mia Wasikowska (Defiance), standing in a garden of talking flowers, at the entrance of a giant mushroom forest. After countless film adaptations of the historic Lewis Carroll novels Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, it appears as if Burton’s adaptation will be the strangest yet. As if that even seemed possible.
