Archive for Joaquin Phoenix

Joaquin Phoenix hasn’t done a whole lot since his trial and error with his rap career spin-off titled I’m Still Here. Now it seems like he’s back and better than ever with The Master, a drama centered on an intellectual whose own religion begins to catch on in the U.S. and a young drifter who becomes his go-to-guy. The film is written and directed by There Will Be Blood helmer Paul Thomas Anderson. The result looks pretty incredible. Feast your eyes on the trailer for The Master after the jump.

The next project from FIVE-time Oscar nominee Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood, Magnolia, Boogie Nights) has had some trouble getting off the ground over the past year or so. His film, tentatively titled The Master (which he also wrote) has hit delay, after delay, originally speculated because of the ‘controversial nature’ of the plot. The film is labeled a ‘religious drama’ that has been ‘heavily influenced’ by the inception and rise of Scientology – aaaand cue South Park episode… now. Anyway, good news Movie Mashers! Deadline is reporting that not only has Harvey Weinstein won a bidding war for worldwide distribution rights for the film, but that Mr. Joaquin Phoenix is officially “locked” to join Phillip Seymour Hoffman as co-leads in the film. Okay, where’s my wallet?

This is going to be so damn awesome. A couple weeks ago we brought you the first teaser poster for the Casey Affleck documentary I’m Still here, about the career transition of Joaquin Phoenix from actor to rapper. The first teaser trailer for the film has popped up online over at Yahoo! and it looks so friggin enthralling. As most of you know by now, Oscar-nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix seemingly went off the deep end a year and a half ago when he announced his retirement from acting to pursue his dream of being a rapper. He then showed up on Letterman looking like a homeless Reservoir Dog (see image above), and provided us with one of the most horrifically uncomfortable and buzzed about late night interviews in years. But a lot of people, including yours truly, are convinced this is all just a huge joke/sociological experiment. A seemingly brilliant, mesmerizing one at that.

Oh, man. I can’t wait for this. Most of you have probably followed or at least know about the surprising changes Joaquin Phoenix made in his life last year. The then-rising star, who earned a Best Actor Oscar nomination for Walk The Line in 2006, had announced out of no where that he was throwing in the acting towel to pursue a career as a rapper. Oh, and he looked like a homeless meth-head. Then the rumors started to creep out that friend and colleague Casey Affleck, was filming Phoenix’ outrageous antics (most famously his disasterously uncomfortable interview on Letterman), for a dockumentary about Phoenix’ apparent slip into madness; basically, it’s all a hoax, or a mockumentary, if you will. Or is it? Well that mockumentary is now finished and Moviefone has the official poster for I’m Still Here, which you can check out after the break.
