The last couple of months Marvel has been in-your-face with The Avengers marketing team working in full force. While I had reservations about showing so much of the film in teasers, trailers, featurettes, behind-the-scenes photos, and other sorts of promotion, the marketing team effectively sold this movie without giving away too much. Only one big moment was ruined by a trailer, something that is more common these days than not. Thankfully, there was so much more to this film than what was shown in all these previews. The Avengers was a fun-filled, surprisingly funny, Summer blockbuster that will give The Dark Knight Rises a worthy foe for the crown of Summer Box Office King.

It was less than a month ago that we got a teaser Super Bowl spot for The Avengers. While that was just a small taste of the upcoming film, this second trailer is like a big spoonful. This time around we get to see the team of alpha males bicker a bit,  and some of the elaborate action pieces — because of this, some plot lines are spoiled. If you don’t want to have too much spoiled for yourself and want everything to be fresh when you see The Avengers after May 4th, skip this trailer.

Honestly, I’m not sure there is room for another Bourne film. I thought the ending to The Bourne Ultimatum was perfect, with Jason disappearing into the river. If you would have asked me when I watched that moment for the first time, there is no way I would’ve assumed another Bourne would be in the works. But, a bankable series equals more dollars, and we all know how hard it is for studios to leave that on the table. They can’t keep their hand out of the cookie jar. While I have my reservations about adding on to this series, the fact The Bourne Legacy stars Jeremy Renner, Edward Norton, and Rachel Weisz does help subdue some of that negativity. This first peek at the films does more of the same.

I’m sure many of our readers were watching the Super Bowl yesterday, and I’m sure a lot of you also made sure to pay attention to the commercials within the game. With the low scoring affair on display yesterday, I’m sure some actually considered the commercials more entertaining. The commercial spots are uber-expensive, but each year the upcoming Summer blockbusters usually put their marketing campaigns into full force with a Super Bowl spot — but notice the absence of a The Dark Knight Rises tease. The best movie ad from the game yesterday was hands down The Avengers spot, which can be seen after the jump. Actually, if you check out this video, you will notice it’s a little bit longer than what was shown on TV yesterday — so call this an extended Super Bowl spot.

How to start this review? The real reason I paid $16.50 to see this film on the true IMAX screen at the Minnesota Zoo was not to watch Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. No offense Tom Cruise. Even before this film started I was completely satisfied, because The Dark Knight Rises prologue left me in awe — I was literally holding my breath I was so enchanted watching the menacing Bane.

Anyway, Tom Cruise’s latest is an amusing action flick, but considering the brilliance of watching Tom Hardy as Bane for about seven minutes, I was let down by the film after that opening. Don’t get me wrong, the action in M:I – Ghost Protocol on the 70 mm (a normal film reel is 35mm) IMAX reel was captivating and worth the money — but this film is over two hours long, and at that length the marathon of action pieces is exhausting.

Finally Marvel Fans get more than just a still image of their beloved heroes in action. The upcoming The Avengers, the culmination of six different heroic Marvel Superheroes into one film to save the Earth, looks like it has a lot of potential. Even making one superhero film great is extremely difficult, imagine creating an uber-film with six of them. That has always been my biggest concern, how is the screen going to be big enough for all these headlining characters? I guess we will have to wait until next Summer to truly find out. Hit the jump to see the teaser.

If you’re wondering, “Wasn’t Jeremy Renner just in a heist film?” The answer is yes, The Town. If you’re wondering, “Is Renner blowing up right now?” The answer is also yes. Renner has just been reported to join an upcoming film called King of Heists (via Deadline). Give the man a break Hollywood, he might need a second to breathe. Renner is starring alongside Tom Cruise in the upcoming Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, will play Hawkeye in next Summer’s The Avengers, and recently finished Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. Oh, did I forget to mention he is about to start production on The Bourne Legacy, the film where he will be taking the mantel from Jason Bourne in the series’ fourth installment? Not sure how I feel about another Bourne film, but nonetheless, the man is coveted by many.

Well, its safe to say that Jeremy Renner, star of Oscar Gem The Hurt Locker, has ascended to the cusp of the Hollywood elite. Whether or not he will stay there is up to him. If I ventured a guess it would be that he will be around for awhile. Although I did not personally think The Hurt Locker was all that it was cracked up to be by the adoring critics (see my review here), Renner did a superb job with his unbalanced character William James. Apparently, I was not the only one to take notice of the talent this 39 year-old possesses.
