GRADE: B
Yes, there are two “of thes” in the title, the film dropped in the late summer season — usually not the time for quality blockbusters — and the main character is an ape. But Rise of the Planet of the Apes works. The apes are compelling as the focus of this story and look so realistic you forget they are computer generated. They have many discernible humanistic qualities, and the main monkey Ceasar flourishes in the spotlight. It is easy to say that this film is worth your time. It wasn’t my favorite of the year, but I would definitely classify Rise of the Planet of the Apes as a must see for a variety of reasons.
GRADE: A-
This movie may not seem appealing to some people. You have to be able to watch a one man act carry the film to the finish line. A man, Aron (pronounced Aaron) is trapped in the wilderness for 127 Hours (obviously) after his arm gets pinned down by a fallen rock. Being lost without anyone knowing where he is, he’s stuck in this spot without sustenance to keep him alive for very long. He attempts to free his wedged arm with the tools available to him in his backpack. But without the means to keep his body going, he begins to freak out, hallucinate, and reflect on his decisions in life. The plight for Aron to free himself from this dire situation is what this film is all about.
Hilarious ‘Your Highness’ Trailer
Posted by: | CommentsScience fiction trailers are sweeping the box office, but where has all the fantasy gone? Fear no more, ladies and noblemen… The time has come to embark on a quest through a mythical land filled with dragons, a virgin damsel in distress, bong smoking, and Natalie Portman in a thong. Now that I have your attention, make way for the trailer for the film, Your Highness, which is David Gordon Green’s follow up film to Pineapple Express.
Teaser Trailer for Danny Boyle’s ’127 Hours’
Posted by: | CommentsThe first teaser trailer for Danny Boyle’s upcoming survival drama 127 hours hit the web today (via In Contention), and it definitely looks very good, but I feel a bit underwhelmed. The film is inspired by the true story of Aaron Ralston, the American mountain climber who had to amputate his arm with a dull knife to escape being pinned by a giant boulder in 2003. You probably saw the news coverage and Ralston’s requisite talk show tour following his rescue. The script for the film was written by Simon Beafoy, whose last collaboration with Boyle on Slumdog Millionaire earned each of them an Oscar statue, for writing and directing respectively. James Franco stars in the film as Ralston, giving him the acting challenge/opportunity of a lifetime, as nearly an hour of the film contains zero dialogue. It’s just Franco and the camera.
James Franco to Star in Planet of the Apes Prequel
Posted by: | CommentsReally? Really? I mean…really??? Good lord, Hollywood. What won’t you reboot, remake or create a prequel for? Just when you thought all the originality in movie-making was at it’s bleakest, this happens. Variety is reporting today that James Franco has signed on to star in 20th Century Fox’s Planet of the Apes prequel, Rise of the Apes. Franco apparently beat out a list of “young elite actors” for the “coveted role” after meeting with director Rupert Wyatt this past weekend.
