GRADE: A

The last couple of months Marvel has been in-your-face with The Avengers marketing team working in full force. While I had reservations about showing so much of the film in teasers, trailers, featurettes, behind-the-scenes photos, and other sorts of promotion, the marketing team effectively sold this movie without giving away too much. Only one big moment was ruined by a trailer, something that is more common these days than not. Thankfully, there was so much more to this film than what was shown in all these previews. The Avengers was a fun-filled, surprisingly funny, Summer blockbuster that will give The Dark Knight Rises a worthy foe for the crown of Summer Box Office King.

So it’s no secret that Iron Man 2 was going to be an inevitable box-office smash, which it proved last week by bursting into theaters with an impressive $130 million opening weekend. But the real test of it’s box-office potential is ultimately how it would perform the the subsequent weeks in theaters, as a new big-budget movie is set to be released almost every week throughout this summer movie season. Well, Stark & Co. have held their ground by fending off it’s major competitor this weekend, Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood.

Iron Man 2 (B+)

The summary of my review, and what should be for all other reviews of Iron Man 2, is this: If you loved the first one, you’ll love the sequel. It’s that simple. There are elements of this movie that can be nit-picked and criticized, but if you come out of the theater angry or disappointed, then I just feel sorry for you. It certainly will not be regarded in the same epic sequel status as The Empire Strikes Back and The Dark Knight, but Iron Man 2 is a fun, funny, action-packed blockbuster, that SHOULD leave you thoroughly entertained.

scalett johannson black widow iron man 2

Iron Man 2 hasn’t even hit theaters yet and it looks like Marvel execs could already be planning a spin-off with the new franchise fem fatale, Black Widow played by Scarlett Jonhannson. Slashfilm attended the press junket for IM2 on Friday, where Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was posed the question of whether Black Widow would be receiving her own spin-off movie, Feige responded with the following statement:

“Definitely possible. Yes, absolutely.”

Prince of Persia_Iron Man 2

The second trailer for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has just hit the web, and I must say that this trailer has me anticipating the film’s May 28th release. I was skeptical after seeing the first trailer that featured little reference to a plot and nothing but overblown typical Bruckheimer action sequences. But this new trailer has dialogue that caught my attention, some reference to appealing story arcs, and was also comical.

Iron Man 2 Poster

It’s been a while since we’ve reported anything on Iron Man 2. Jon Favreau & Co. have been very quite since debuting five minutes of footage at Comic-Con in July; a bootlegged version of which you can watch on YouTube. While this is undoubtedly one of the most-anticipated blockbusters of 2010 and is sure to rake in a fortune, I’m surprised by the lack of official footage that Marvel has yet to release.

IM2 Jake G

Iron Man 2 is in the thick of filming right now and we’re getting some new information about the film, as well as our first look at the gorgeous Scarlett Johansson. Scarlett Jo plays Russian superspy Natasha Romanoff (aka the Black Widow), who is hired as Tony Stark’s assistant, which inevitably sparks romantic tension between Stark and former assistant Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). Potts has been promoted to CEO of Stark Industries. I wrote a post at the end of May discussing my conspiracy theory regarding the on-set cat fight between Scarlett Jo and Paltrow, and how director Jon Favreau was using Twitter as an indirect outlet for PR damage control. Check that out to get caught up on some of the juicy tidbits that have occurred on the set of IM2 thus far.

leo-rourke-spawn

Let’s first clear a few things as a lot of you might be super excited or really pissed that Leo is going to be playing Spawn in either a remake or a sequel to 1997′s effects-driven superhero flick Spawn. Let me reassure you that Leo WILL NOT has not committed, nor is he being pursued to play the hell-condemned anti-hero lead. Leo IS, however, being aggressively pursued by Spawn writer and creator Todd McFarlane to be “the guy chasing Spawn,” who is the lead in this potential reboot.

scarlett-vs-gwyneth

Last week it was reported that Scarlett Johansson and Gwyneth Paltrow are not getting along on the set of Iron Man 2. The report came from the British paper The Sun, which is pretty much a gossip rag that has had other outrageous claims in the past. But their “scoop” has yet to be debunked and almost every entertainment site has run the story, so there must be some truth to it, right? So the Sun claims their source from the IM2 set told them:

“Gwyneth has become very frustrated with Scarlett. They come from different worlds and have completely different styles. Gwyneth has found Scarlett very demanding of the attention of the crew. It’s not a happy set.”
