The Movie Mash_Best Movies of 2009

With the close out of the year 2009 what kind of movie site would The Movie Mash be without talking about this year’s best. This year marked the last of the 2000′s decade, and it was filled with quality cinema. Over the year movie goers of all different tastes could enjoy what Hollywood brought us in 2009. Whether you love action, drama, comedies, horror, or a mix of those, 2009 probably met your movie going needs.

Funny Peeps

Sorry for the hiatus folks, but after Comic-Con I think studios needed a week or so to decompress, thus resulting in the VERY slow past five days of movie news. Anyway, I’m back with this week’s edition of Box-Office Benjamin$ and Judd Apatow’s Funny People is on top, taking in a respectable $22.7 million during it’s opening weekend. This could be seen as somewhat of a disappointment for a labeled “R-rated blockbuster comedy” with such name-brand star-power, while The Hangover makes over twice as much on its opening weekend. Word must have spread about the heightened level of emotional drama, compared to Apatow’s previous two films, which maybe some people didn’t like or want to see.  But that is why I think this movie is so great and is FAR superior as a motion picture than The Hangover. Check out my review of Funny People HERE.

Funny People (A-)

Judd Apatow has had a huge effect on Hollywood comedies. With his first two films, The 40 Year-Old Virgin & Knocked Up, he has effectively changed the game and could be dubbed the “Godfather of raunchy blockbuster comedies.” After the massive success of his first two outings, both grossing well over $100 million each, R-rated comedies from other filmmakers have had to reach and/or succeed the bar that he has set. With his third film, Funny People, which he wrote and directed, Apatow has put forth a comedy that incorporates much more human, personal, emotional and dramatic elements than any other film that he’s been involved with. It’s the first Apatow flick that I’m probably going to go back for a second viewing.

Funny People Raaaaaaandy

The letters at the top right of the image above is an acronym and will make you pee your pants when you discover it’s meaning in Part 2 of “Raaaaaaaandy!” Nearly a couple months ago, I posted some viral videos that had been put online to promote Judd Apatow’s Funny People, featuring some of the characters in the film. It featured Jason Schwartzman’s character Mark, who was profiled  in a mockumentary-style interview series of videos. Funny People of course, is about George Simmons (Adam Sandler), a very successful stand up comedian who learns that he has an untreatable blood disorder and is given less than a year to live. Ira ( Seth Rogen) is a struggling up-and-coming stand up comedian who works at a deli and has yet to figure out his onstage persona. One night, these two perform at the same club and George takes notice of Ira. George hires Ira to be his semi-personal assistant as well as his friend.

fox em

After battling massive transforming alien-robots for the past four years, Megan Fox decided to go a different route for her next movie. And it seems as though she wanted to get down and dirty, or should I say, down and BLOODY?! Fox’ next upcoming movie is called Jennifer’s Body. The film is described as a Heathers-like dark comedy, which tells the story of a seemingly-perfect cheerleader whose life is thrown into disarray when she gets possessed by a demon, begins eating boys in her small town, then faces off against her best friend and the Satan-worshiping band that made her evil.

sean-penn

● Now this sucks! Say what you want about Sean Penn and his political agenda, but the dude is an AMAZINGLY GREAT actor. He’s a two-time Oscar winner for Christ sakes! Unfortunately, Penn just announced that he’s taking a year off from making movies, to resolve “personal matters.” Last month Penn filed for a request to dismiss his divorce proceedings from his wife Robin Wright Penn, the second time he’s done so. This decision is going to affect some high-profile films that he  had already committed to.

yo-teach

It seems as though the powers that be are circulating some funny viral videos online to promote Judd Apatow’s upcoming third film, Funny People starring Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen; the first two of course being 40 Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up. It’s in no way as “VIRAL” as say the Why So Serious? campaign was for The Dark Knight, which was unbelievably interactive, elaborate and lasted like seven months, but it’s still good online guerilla marketing to generate buzz. So the plot of Funny People surrounds George (Sandler), a very successful stand up comedian who learns that he has an untreatable blood disorder and is given less than a year to live. Ira (Rogen) is a struggling up-and-coming stand up comedian who works at a deli and has yet to figure out his onstage persona. One night, these two perform at the same club and George takes notice of Ira. George hires Ira to be his semi-personal assistant as well as his friend.
