Inglorious Basterds

After a very warm critical reception and the enticing brand name that is Quentin Tarantino, Inglorious Basterds blew up the box-office this weekend by raking in an impressive $37.6 million. It’s the biggest opening weekend for Tarantino’s blood-spattered career; the second best being Kill Bill in 2003, which brought in just over $22 million during its opening weekend. Oh, and the fact that The Weinstein Company had Brad Pitt’s face to plaster all over banner ads and TV spots didn’t hurt. It was just a great movie and it really was Tarantino’s masterpiece; as Lt. Aldo Raine  mentioned in the film’s closing shot.

GRADE: A

When you walk out of the theater after seeing District 9, you will feel beaten down. You will feel dirty, emotional and exhausted from the insane thrills you had just endured while being transported to another world for two hours. This film was fantastic from top to bottom: the acting, the writing, the action, the effects, the emotion, the direction, it was all top-notch. And most importantly, it’s something that you have NEVER seen before. This movie is so unique, that it makes you get on your knees and thank the movie gods for delivering us something fresh and original, amidst a plethora of remakes, reboots and sequels. You think you know, you have no idea. This is a review of District 9.

gi joe

Looks like I was finally right with my G.I. Joe box-office prediction, or at least close. Last week I predicted that Joe & Co. would top the box-office this weekend with $62 million. I was only off by $6 million as Joe brought in an impressive $56.2 million from Friday to Sunday. The rest of my predictions were way, off, but I digress. So despite mostly negative reviews and just general negative perceptions prior to release, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra showed, like Transformers 2, that mindless action can find a significant audience during the summer months. So much so, that Paramount has already announced plans to very soon, initiate development on G.I. Joe 2: Reign of Cobra?. Classic.

district 9

You’ve undoubtedly read my lengthy post from yesterday, chronicling and analyzing the amazing viral marketing campaign for Sony Pictures’ District 9. If that didn’t get you even somewhat excited to see this movie, then you are either a robot, dead or have no soul. The second trailer for D9 is scheduled to premiere in theaters on Friday in front of Bruno, but as studios usually due, Sony released the second trailer for District 9 online today. And it…is…AWESOME! I thought that there is no way I could get any more excited for this movie, but after watching this mind-blowingly intense second trailer, I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do until the film opens August 14.

district 9

District 9 is and has been, my #1 most-anticipated movie of the summer. Why? Because it’s unique. It’s mysterious. It is an unprecedented twist on the typical “alien invasion” concept that has been nearly bled dry by Hollywood. Do these aliens want to be here? Is their goal to enslave mankind and use up our natural resources? No. In fact, its the humans who are the oppressors in this Sci-Fi enigma. I believe this film will restore the movie-goer’s faith in this tapped-out concept. Oh and its viral marketing campaign is pretty sweet too.

district-9-alien1

I’ve already elaborated enough on District 9. But there is a newer version of the first teaser trailer; without the alien’s face being blurred and with subtitles during its interrogation. The translation of the alien’s words during this scene give us a better understanding of the potential story, as well as a more curious twist to this mysterious film. First of all, the alien’s face is creepy and disgusting, with its tentacle appendages twitching as it pleads with the human. Very real and well made. Top notch makeup/effects. Mic chec 1 2, courtesy of FirstShowing.net. (click the arrows next to the volume for full-screen)

Here’s a transcript of the human-alien interrogation:

Man: Why are you here?
Alien: We didn’t mean to land here? We had no choice.
Man: Why don’t you just leave?
Alien: How can we go anywhere if you have our ship?
Man: How do your weapons work?
Alien: We mean you no harm. We just want to go home.

We just want to go home,” it says. From the rest of the alien’s pleas, we can make the conclusion that the aliens had to land on Earth because of some sort of last resort emergency and/or mistake and are now being held captive by the humans; aka alien concentration camps as I referred to in the first D9 update. That’s a rather unique and original twist to the “alien invasion” bit. Needless to say this film keeps getting better and better and I am hook, line and sinker obsessed. You can be sure that there will be detailed updates on District 9 news as it occurs.

What Do You Think? Discuss.

district-9-poster-usa_mid1If you scroll down The Movie Mash main page, you’ll see a mash that I posted last week with the chilling new teaser-trailer for District 9, which premiered in front of X-Men Origins: Wolverine over the weekend. I elaborated as best I could on the available plot information, but it is apparent that Sony Pictures is slowly releasing bits of info. about this film, creating a Cloverfield-style “what the hell is it?” vibe, to ultimately heighten anticipation and curiosity.

Alex Billington over at FirstShowing.net picked up the latest issue of Rolling Stone, which has an extended look at newly revealed plot details. It seems to only be available in the hard copy issue because it’s no where to be found on  RollingStone.com. Their website is actually quite amateur for such a major publication BTW. Regardless, Mr. Billington was kind enough to take a photograph of the issue and upload it. Check it out.
