Matt’s Review: It’s Safe To Say That ‘Safe House’ Isn’t Worth Theater Dollars
Posted by: | CommentsGRADE: D+
I can probably guess that many will not dislike Safe House as much as I did. The audience surrounding me at the midnight showing was cheering the film in appreciation and shrieking during some of the bloody battles. About 15 minutes in, I could already tell Safe House was going to be a run-of-the mill early 2012 release no one would remember — except maybe for its inadequacy. Even the greatness of Denzel could not keep this sinking ship afloat.
It’s been awhile since we’ve done a Trailer Trash Mash, and in light of me slacking on getting individual posts regarding these trailers, I’ll just throw them all into one. After the jump you can check out trailers for Safe House which stars Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, 21 Jump Street starring a skinny Jonah Hill and a kind of funny Channing Tatum, Snow White and the Huntsman starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth, and Goon with Seann William Scott. Whew, that was a lot
Matt’s Review: ‘Unstoppable’ is Entertaining – But Cliché Throughout
Posted by: | CommentsGRADE: B-
I could tell before seeing Unstoppable loving the film would be a stretch for me. Not that I don’t love Denzel Washington, or that I wasn’t impressed with Chris Pine from his debut in the smash hit Star Trek, but Unstoppable just didn’t really strike me as a must see. I am sure most of my feelings about the movie upfront reside with the fact the last effort from director Tony Scott was also an average movie about trains. The Taking of Pelham 123 is the film I am referring to, a project that also starred Denzel Washington trying to avoid disaster on the tracks.
Netflix This: Inside Man

My name is Dalton Russell. Pay strict attention to what I say because I choose my words carefully, and I never repeat myself. I’ve told you my name: that’s the Who.
The above is part of the opening narration from the film Inside Man. In this edition of Netflix This, I have a recommendation for a movie at least some of you have seen or heard of. I am referring to one of the best films I have ever seen and definitely Spike Lee’s best movie, or “joint” as the New Yorker refers to his films. This 2006 project is the crown jewel in Russell Gewirtz‘s writing repertoire as his only other legit project was the below average 2008 Righteous Kill (which I think was not great because of sub par writing). I must say that Gewirtz covered all his angles with Inside Man as it was one of the better written movies I have had the joy of watching. I always appreciate narratives that are not completely linear storytelling, and Inside Man dips into that cookie jar.
Pelham-Déjà vu, I mean, ‘Unstoppable’ Trailer Hits The Web
Posted by: | CommentsIt’s funny that director Tony Scott made an action-thriller, starring Denzel Washington, circling around a deadly public tragedy, involving innocent people, that only Denzel could fix, called Déjà vu. Every time I see a trailer for one of Scott’s upcoming films, that’s what I get, because they all seem to feature those same dramatic story elements. The trailer for the newest collab between Scott and Denzel, Unstoppable, popped up on the web today (via FirstShowing), and it looks disappointingly identical to Déjà vu and The Taking of Pelham 123. I mean, Scott is an excellent director, with such exciting and more original credits like Enemy of the State and Man on Fire, but lately, he and Denzel seem to be too interested in reducing, reusing and recycling.
Matt’s Review: The Book of Eli Is Powerful, But Still Average
Posted by: | CommentsThe Book of Eli (C)
This is the latest movie from the always great Denzel Washington. It also stars the talent of Gary Oldman, Michael Gambon, and Mila Kunis. I would like to take a moment to say “Oh how much I love Mila Kunis!” She did a very good job with her character Solara but also looked magnificent while doing it. Even in the very un-glamorous world the story is set in she still looked like a million bucks (Hollywood right?). Mila proved she has some acting chops, and with performances like this she will continue to get lucrative roles with stars like Denzel.
