Batman 3 Update: Script Status and The Riddler Confirmed, Kind Of
Posted by: | CommentsWant to know the best thing about Inception? This statement is going to stir up some objections, and don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved Inception. But in my opinion, the best thing about Inception is Nolan finally being done with it. That said, the road to the untitled Batman 3 sequel to The Dark Knight begins now. While Nolan hasn’t revealed hardly a morsel of information about the highly anticipated third installment, we know for sure the script is near completion and the official release date is July 20th, 2012. While most of this news is a week or so old, I thought I would provide you with single, thorough update.

Three-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer Wally Pfister was presented with the prestigious Star Award for his contribution to movies. Pfister has become Christopher Nolan’s go-to Director of Photography, working on all of Nolan’s films. Cinematical caught up with Pfister for an interview after a screening of Memento, where Pfister also gave the lucky attendees a sneak-peek at Inception; the same three-minute footage that was shown at ShoWest in Las Vegas last month.

Posted by: | Comments“And here, we…go!” It’s official. It’s true. And man is it a great day to bee a comic-book movie fan. About a month ago we posted news that not only was Warner Bros. getting their crap together for a much needed Superman reboot, but that Batman savior Christopher Nolan was going to have an integral part in its development. At that time, it was not confirmed, it was just industry chatter. It is now a fact. And we know this, because the man of the hour has said so himself.
Filed Under:Batman 3, Christopher Nolan, movie news, supermanIt seems as though Christopher Nolan is the new CEO, Chairman and creative controller of Warner Bros. He re-defined the superhero genre with his dark, gritty, character-driven reboot on the Batman franchise. Nolan’s Batman films have grossed nearly $1.5 billion worldwide, garnered universal critical acclaim and 10 Oscar nominations. He gave WB first dibs to buy his original script for Inception, which they gobbled up before any other studio could even look at it. Now, with time running out on WB’s copyright claim to the Superman property, which expires in 2013, they’re pulling out all the stops to make sure this newest incarnation of the Man of Steel proceeds in the right direction; by having Nolan “mentor the development” of the project.

So after yesterday’s post of the “reported” upcoming Warner Bros. announcement this January regarding Batman 3 and Christopher Nolan’s involvement, I thought it would be perfect timing to see who you guys think WB suits should try to woo if Nolan does indeed decide to pass on returning.
Analysis after the break.

THE MOVIE MASH IS BACK!!! Thousands of apologizes to all The Movie Mashers. I just started a new job and have been working a lot. Plus this idiot acquaintance of mine, stepped on my laptop, ruining the screen, thus my Photoshop/home computer access has been extremely limited. But I’ve worked out some writing time slots with my roommates that will hopefully allow me to provide you with the best movie analysis on the web at least once a day. So let’s get to it. The “will he?/won’t he?” back-and-forth banter regarding whether or not Christopher Nolan will return to the Batman franchise one last time with a follow-up to The Dark Knight has been going on since TDK first left theaters. The hopeful film-to-be would of course cap off his already legendary superhero trilogy that has forever cemented itself atop the threshold of American cinema. It has been well documented on The Movie Mash for months. Well, now we have “word” that Warner Bros. will wipe the drool away from fanboys everywhere with an announcement on the future of the Batman franchise and Nolan’s involvement in it.

There is no script (that we know of), there has been no announcement by Warner Bros., and yet the rumors surrounding the inevitable third installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise continue to persist. A big reason for this is most definitely because the amazing teaser trailer for Inception that was released a few days ago. Everybody wants a piece of Chris Nolan. First I’ll get the ridiculous out of the way. Megan Fox is NOT going to be cast as Catwoman in Batman 3, despite recent reports confirming that the actress has already been signed to play antagonist Selina Kyle. I honestly don’t know how the London-based gossip rag, The Sun, even cooks up this stuff. Remember a few months back when they claimed that Eddie Murphy had be cast as The Riddler? Yeah, I know.

Posted by: | CommentsTotal Film Magazine has an interview with Christian Bale that hits newsstands tomorrow. They spoke with the Welsh actor last month as he and Warner Bros. were gearing up to promote Terminator Salvation. The conversation, as it tends to do when speaking with Bale, inevitably evolved into a conversation about Batman. Bale discussed Heath Ledger’s legendary performance and Oscar win, as well as TDK’s best picture snub. Then he touched on a question that the entire world is asking with salivating anticipation: What’s the deal with Batman 3?

Bale elaborated on the subject: “Will we do a third movie? It’s got to be the right story. You can’t make something like The Dark Knight and then come out with something disappointing. I would like it if people say, ‘You’ll never make a good third movie.’ I say, ‘OK, let’s make a third movie in that case, let’s prove them wrong. But that’s just me. The fact is, I have to! I’ve signed up! Chris doesn’t. So I’m in a bit of a fix if he says he doesn’t want to!” So breathe easy bat-fans, there will be a 3rd film with Christian Bale as The Caped Crusader. But what about the man whose vision of Batman revolutionized Hollywood and they way we throw around the term “blockbuster?” Listen to me!…Christopher Nolan WILL be back to direct his 3rd and final Batman film.
Lets break this down. In an interview with the LA Times back in October of last year, he gave a very coy response when asked about returning for a third film, saying “If the story is there, everything is possible. I hope that was a suitably slippery answer.” The fact that he didn’t say “No, I’m all Batman’d out” (like Bryan Singer did after X2) means he’ll be back. Plus he’s continuing his intermission filming routine. Like he did after Batman Begins, he took a break and did The Prestige. Now, after TDK, he’s doing Inception before he tackles the final installment in his Batman trilogy. It’s a way for him to clear his head artistically and not get brain fried from too much Batman.
The Dark Knight made over $1 billion people! It’s getting close to a year since TDK was released last summer and NO NEW director has been announced. Iron Man 2 is already shooting and it made half the amount of money, as well as being released only two months prior to TDK. If a studio’s film makes $1 billion, they would USUALLY want to get the sequel out ASAP to capitalize on the public’s appetite for the former movie; “strike while the iron’s hot” one might say. Unless!…they want the director to come back for the sequel. So to please him artistically, they sign an agreement that allows him to contractually do another film before returning to finish the trilogy. The Dark Knight shattered so many levels of quality and expectations, that the only person who has a possible chance at meeting or exceeding them, is Christopher Nolan. Warner Bros. is not stupid enough to endure the fanboy back lash that would occur if they were to enlist a new director because they were too ancy to wait for a 3rd film and do it right. We all remember Brett Rattner and X-Men 3.
We are going to have to be patient. Inception begins shooting this summer and will be released in July of next summer. It’ll be in theaters for two months, then released on DVD in Novemberish. So the earliest that Nolan will admit any tidbits of script, characters, casting, etc., will be around Christmas of 2010. Damn that’s a long time, but the wait will be more than worth it. I’ll be posting an article soon on what I THINK the story of Batman 3 should be, who should be cast and why. Stay tuned.
