2011 Holiday Movie Guide

Hollywood is known for bunching releases in certain time frames that fit their strategy. January and February are the dumping grounds for forgetful flops. June through August are the glory days for blockbusters full of explosions and scantily clad ladies. September through December are the months where drama reigns king. But at the end of December, as Christmas rolls around, we get an onslaught of choices that are both entertaining and award-worthy. So, how do you pick the right one for you? Our 2011 Holiday Movie Guide, of course!

There are nine high-profile movies hitting theaters between December 16th and December 30th, along with four highly-touted limited release art films. We are aware some movies will still be in theaters from late November, but this guide is focused on those releasing in the last two weeks of December. In order to make this a little more focused, we’ll give you some sub-categories for exactly what we think each type of movie lover might want.

“Eh.” That’s what I muttered under my breath as I left a screening of The Tourist earlier this week. With the A++++ headlining  duo of Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, I was expecting this to be at least “not-your-average spy thriller.” But alas, that is not the case. The Tourist is boring, forgettable and a film that I am glad that I didn’t pay to see. There is no “well, they needed a paycheck” rationale for Depp and Jolie, so the fact that they wasted five or so months of their time with this film really baffles me. As the headline of this review suggests, it’s a waste of their talents and our time.

You’d think that the first teaming up of THE, not “two of the,” THE two biggest movie stars on the planet in a highly-anticipated action-thriller, the first trailer should generate automatic mind explosions of awesomeness. But alas, here we are with the first “meh” trailer for The Tourist, starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t look bat at all, and I will surely see it in theaters; it does, however, look like every other cliche, fish out of water, identity-shifting, European location-spanning, romantic-thriller, with a dab of comedy…that we’ve all seen a thousand times.

Well I certainly didn’t see this one coming. Angelina Jolie’s next film will be a love story set during the Bosnian War that raged for three years from 1992-1995, and became a stain on the early years of the Clinton administration. Here’s the kicker though, she will NOT be acting in the film at all, she will instead be writing the script herself,  as well as produce and direct the film, making it her “directorial debut.” The announcement was made on the GK Films blog (via FirstShowing), which is the production company producing the film. This is surprising because it is kind of out of left field. She hadn’t made any sort of hints in interviews for her most recent films that she had any interest in directing this soon. And there was no reason to speculate because of the endless amount of projects she is attached or rumored to star in. But alas, here we are. I think it’s great, actually, and I’m excited to see what she does with this project.

Angelina Jolie headlines this project as a character that isn’t a stretch from her usual sexy but deadly roles (Wanted, Tomb Raider, Mr. and Mrs. Smith). This 2010 film directed by Phillip Noyce seems to exist in a world close to our own reality where Jolie is an actual vulnerable human being. The previous mentioned films all put Jolie in a world of her own, on a pedestal of elite combative prowess. My perception of Salt early on was Jolie working her tail off to narrowly escape capture. Then the action sequences kept unfolding with Jolie coming out on top and unscathed. I began to question the film’s integrity to reality as it slipped closer and closer to mindless action.
