The Movie Mash is proud to announce two new additions to our writing staff, with Sarah Williams and Sam Portz. This website has grown significantly over the past year, and with more readers comes a larger demand for consistent, original content, so this felt like the right time to bring aboard some additional talent to help. Sarah and Sam will provide you with the traditional news, Netflix This and movie reviews that you’ve come accustomed to, but they’re also going to shake things up a bit by bringing you original features that focus on film scores/music, foreign films and analytical essays. Go to the About Us page to check out more on Sarah and Sam, and please feel free to welcome them in the comments section after the break.

As Matt and I have the sci-fi/action/blockbuster genres under control, Abby will be providing a woman’s point-of-view into the movie world, writing news articles and features about romantic comedies, dramas and classic films. 82 academy awards_oscar statue

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the nominees this morning live from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Anne Hathaway, who was nominated for Best Actress last year, and AMPAS President Tom Sherak presented the nominations. This is going to be very different than any other due to the decision by the Academy to expand the Best Picture category from five to 10 nominees. I talked about the Best Picture issue in great detail when the expansion was announced this past summer.

disqus-sign

Since the beginning of The Movie Mash, we have been using Intense Debate as the commenting format. Unfortunately that system has been causing me some unnecessary headaches, so I have decided to switch. Disqus is a far superior format, allowing the best possible discussion on the site. Creating a profile is quick and easy. Just go to Disqus.com, make a profile and you’re set. Do this ASAP, so the “Top Commenters” feature can get up and running again.

Thanks all!

Couples Retreat Box Office

Vince Vaughn has proven that his comedy star power is still going strong this weekend as his tropical rom-com Couples Retreat snagged the top spot at the box-office taking in a very solid $35.3 million. Three out of his past four comedies, (minus Fred Claus) Wedding Crashers, The Break-Up and Four Christmases all grossed well over $100 million domestically, displaying the affection most movie-goers have for the fast-talking funnyman.

Welcome A New Masher

Posted by: Barrett Goetz | Comments View Comments

As Matt, Travis and I cannot provide reviews, news and profiles for every movie, I was proposed some help from a good friend of mine. Many of you know this man, his name is Kenny Smith. Kenny is a recent U of M grad and has an affinity for indie flicks. While he enjoys all genres of films, Kenny has a special place in his heart for low-budget, character-driven films that don’t usually open with huge box-office numbers. Kenny will have a special segment on the movie mash called Kendogg Billionaire, The Indie Masher, where he provides film reviews and profiles of movies that can usually only be seen at the Lagoon or the Uptown Theater. Kenny’s first contribution will be his review of Away We Go, the new film from Sam Mendes starring John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph. Please welcome Kenny to The Movie Mash.

disney_up_movie_poster1As has been the case with every Pixar movie I have ever seen, I walked out of the theater more than satisfied. The animation giant strikes again with its newest adventure called UP. Movie goers have the option of viewing a 2-D or 3-D version of the latest installment in the Pixar franchise. I went for the 2-D because I just wanted to see the film; and I think 3-D is highly overrated and overpriced.

UP begins with two young children aspiring to be explorers named Carl and Ellie. They are looking to follow the footsteps of their hero Charles Muntz by exploring the uncharted territory in South America. Carl promises Ellie he will bring her on this grand adventure someday, and they quickly become best friends. They fit together like Scarlett Johansson and tight clothes, (which is amazing!) and as they grow up, get married. A brief montage-like summary of their life gives the audience a real sense of their strong relationship and love for one another. Pixar keeps it creative like always with an interesting time lapse to age Carl and Ellie from young to old.

As most of you Movie Mashers well know, Hollywood and Fox Studios was recently taken by storm due to the catastrophic DVD-quality online leak of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Now, when this originally happened a couple weeks ago, a friend of mine, (let’s just call him Izzy) downloaded the film and was desperate to watch it, due to his affection for comic-book adaptations. But I stayed strong, vowing that there are only 3 to 4 blockbusters a year that REQUIRE a theater experience. Then a friend sent me the absolutely shocking ending of the film, that I could not resist. Watch at your own risk.

JK! LOL! Totes Magotes got you!
