Last week I detailed a poster debuting for the upcoming 3rd Bond movie starring Daniel Craig. In the post I talked of Skyfall‘s teaser dropping on Monday. I wouldn’t be a proper movie ‘journo’ (Green Street Hooligans anyone?) without following the poster and showing off this Bond teaser on The Movie Mash. Hit the jump to catch a glimpse.

Check it.

The teaser is a little underwhelming, but it is a teaser. So I wasn’t really expecting much. At the same time it is gratifying to see Daniel Craig back in this role — many may remember that with the financial problems of MGM and the company filing for bankruptcy, more Bond titles with Craig were an uncertainty. I’m excited to see another chapter from Craig, as he is after all my favorite Bond. Yes, Daniel Craig is my favorite — and Casino Royale is my favorite Bond movie. Despite Craig doing well in the 2008 follow-up, Quantum of Solace in most regards was a disaster.

All in all, this teaser shows off typical Bond movie traits: guns, action, espionage, and beautiful women. The action looks amazing, as do most of the visuals — this is something to expect when the legendary Roger Deakins is the Director of Photography. Skyfall also boasts one of the better casts in recent memory with Ralph Fiennes and Javier Bardem starring alongside Judi Dench and Craig.

What Did You Think Of The Teaser?

Jackie Chan has made his last action film. For martial arts movie fans such as myself, that sentence is difficult to read and even harder to type. I’ve been watching Jackie Chan films since I was a little kid. I would punch and kick couch cushions during the action sequences of his movies until I’d be out of breath and asking my mom for water. While his films may not be Oscar worthy, every film was fun and enjoyable. Now the ride must come to an end. Chinese Zodiac will mark the end of Jackie Chan’s Kung-Fu mastery on film. Take a moment and check out the trailer for Chinese Zodiac after the jump.

Here is the trailer for Chinese Zodiac:

The looks like the usual American/Chinese Jackie Chan film, full of action with very little story. Jackie called Chinese Zodiac the most important film of his career. That figures with the film taking seven years to be produced and one year to film in five countries. Ultimately, the trailer gives us almost no plot points about the film other than Jackie Chan playing a thief with his eyes set on some very ancient artifacts. But the plot of the film itself is not nearly as important as the fact that this is the last action film for Jackie.

The man is 58 years old and can no longer throw himself around like he use to. It’s surprising that he’s still alive, much less in as good of condition as he is after decades of getting beat up. He has stated that he will still act in motion pictures, but will not play any part in the action aspect. He was promoting his last horrah at the Cannes Film Festival and there he talked about his retirement from action films.

This is my last action film. I’m not young anymore. I’m really, really tired.

Jackie has been ass-kicking in films since the early 1970’s and has been acting since the early 1960’s. With over 100 films under his black-belt, he is a certified legend and icon in the film industry. I would suspect that we’d see Jackie in a few sequels to his more recent American hits like Karate Kid 2 and Rush Hour 4. But sadly we have seen the last of Jackie Chan as an action star. Thanks for the memories Jackie.

J.J. Abrams is attached to another disaster show with mysterious elements layered in. His previous credit was the hit show LOST which ran for six seasons on ABC. Now he is backing a series called Revolution, a show set in a drastically different future where humankind no longer possesses the power of electricity after a mysterious incident wipes it all out. The show’s pilot was also directed by Iron Man Director Jon Favreau and looks to feature a decent size budget considering all the VFX involved. Hit the jump to get a look.

Watch me.

The show looks pretty cool right? This should be right up the alley of LOST fans — bands of people looking to survive outside the comforts of the modern world while struggling to discover the mysteries within their own. So this isn’t just another survive on an island or post-apocalyptic future type show, it’s also a discover how ‘we’ got there show. Just like LOST right? I don’t mind, because I loved LOST and this looks like another show filled with intrigue, action, and fun to keep me entertained. I’ll definitely be giving Revolution a shot this Fall.

Revolution will air Monday nights at 10/9 c this Fall on NBC.

As a bonus, I thought I’d pass along this short called RUIN I discovered thanks to fellow Mash writer Mike. He commented on how the visuals in these two videos are very similar — both are set in the ruins of our modernized world. While Revolution is going to be a live-action NBC television show, RUIN is an animated short that looks to evolve into a web series — the end of this video teases of more to come. This video is not only extremely interesting to watch unfold, but the visuals are crisp and well imagined. The main character spends a portion of the short escaping on a motorcycle, a breathtaking, perfectly shot, and exquisitely animated sequence. You should definitely not miss your opportunity to watch this.

Two of Hollywood’s biggest names are about to tackle each other in the wrestling ring of politics in this sure-to-be-funny comedy. The Campaign is about two rival politicians (Ferrell & Galifianakis) who are trying to win an election to represent a small district in North Carolina. Cam Brady (Ferrell), who usually runs unopposed, is going for his 5th term in office until the moronic Marty Huggins comes along. DURHERRRRR! Feast your eyes on the trailer after the jump.

Here is the first trailer for The Campaign:

I love the idea of this movie. Zach and Will battling each other for a political seat is a fantastic set-up. However, there were a couple of things about the trailer that bothered me. I wasn’t at all feeling the idea of Zach being some dim-witted dumb shit who just wants to run for office. And I don’t think Will Ferrell is capable of portraying a political figure without some sort of southern dialect. It worked so well on SNL, but it’s kind of old now.

With the 2012 election season coming up, it’s very timely and current to have a movie like this.Especially considering there might be no enterprise goofier than politics; but this film looks almost too goofy. The bit with Ferrell punching the baby is pretty funny, and judging from the trailer there will be one-liners-a-plenty. Overall, this film feels like a misfire. Hopefully, the second trailer will prove me wrong, but I think we’ve seen pretty much all we need to.

The Campaign is set to be released on August 10th.

Are You Excited For This Pairing?

Any movie with Ryan Gosling these days is worth seeing. Put him as a crime fighting gangster alongside some of the biggest and brightest in Hollywood and book seats at this year’s award shows. That’s what Gangster Squad screamed to me when I first watched this trailer. Gosling is just the tip of the iceberg however — Sean Penn stars as a ‘god-like’ crooked kingpin fighting against Josh Brolin and his team of off the radar enforcement in a Los Angeles story based on true events. Director Ruben Fleischer also has re-teamed with the gorgeous and very busy Emma Stone — the pair worked together on Zombieland. If this trailer is any indication, Gangster Squad is going to be a force to be reckoned with in 2012.

Check it.

Right? The look, the feel, the setting, the performances, the action, they all seem to fit right. Aside from this trailer, when a cast of stars all assemble in a movie like this one has to assume there is something special within the pages of the script — or Gangster Squad has one hell of a Casting Director. Aside from the talent listed above, the film stars: Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi, Nick Nolte, Michael Peña, and Robert Patrick. That’s an ensemble cast crafted with nothing but stars. I love these type of gangster films and Gangster Squad has the appearance of a possible classic in the genre.

Gangster Squad has no official release date, but will drop sometime in late 2012.

Do You Think This Will Be A Classic?

Back in 1979, the governments of the United States and Canada joined forces to rescue six U.S. foreign service members who had escaped a hostage takeover at the U.S. Embassy in Iran. The idea was to assist their escape by giving them fake identities as members of a film crew for a fake film called Argo. Capturing this story has been made into a real film and the trailer is ready for your viewing pleasure.

Here’s the trailer for Argo.

The film dives into an incredible true story that I doubt many people knew about before watching the trailer. The story of the Canadian Caper is not only daring, but it’s also intelligent. Ben Affleck is a great director fit to tell this story. I’ll admit I was a bit thrown off by the party music used about halfway through the trailer while Affleck gathers the crew members for the fake film. It gave the trailer too much of a Ocean’s Eleven feel for me, and the event itself is a bit too chilling for such music. But overall, the movie looks very good.

I personally love Ben Affleck as a director, more so than an actor. He has made some great films like Gone Baby Gone and The Town which Matthew called a ‘must see’ in his review. To see a promising director like Ben continue to make captivating movies like this gets me excited. He stars in the film with other talents such as Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Kyle Chandler and Taylor Schilling.

Argo is scheduled to be released on October 12th.

End of Watch just popped up on my radar. While neither Jake Gyllenhaal nor Michael Peña are amongst my favorite actors, both are very talented and have successes in certain roles. One thing that really stood out to me from this trailer was how much this pair looks like two regular ‘beat cops’ policing the rough streets of Los Angeles. The trailer really hammers the strong partnership between the pair — the predicament they get themselves into will no doubt test that bond. Hit the jump to see the trailer.

Check it.

Aside from the Training Day-esque tone of the film, this film was written by the same scribe, David Ayer, End of Watch teases a standoff between these partners and a drug cartel. For those who don’t know, the cartels running the drug game are ruthless, their violence unmatched.

Ayer also directed this film — the man is drawn to these ‘mean-street’ type of movies seeing he was involved in Harsh Times, Street Kings, Training Day, and Dark Blue. If you notice this film also seems to be shot with the ‘found footage’ style in mind, almost like an extended episode of COPS. You’ll also notice Anna Kendrick as Gyllenhaal’s wife — this almost guarantees I will be seeing this movie, because I will watch anything this talented ascending actress is involved in.

End of Watch hits theaters September 28th, 2012.

It’s no secret that The Amazing Spider-Man is one of my most anticipated movies of the Summer, Spidey is one of my favorite superheroes. The Dark Knight Rises is obviously my number one most anticipated for many reasons, most of which includes the two amazing trailers teasing the movie — not to mention an epic prologue. This latest trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man brings more life to the story mixing in plenty of web-slinging action to ready fans for the 3D Summer adventure.

Check it out.

In this trailer we are treated to a closer look at The Lizard and get to see Spider-Man and this green menace really duking it out. The Lizard is huge! Spider-Man is going to have his hands full dealing with that type of brute strength. The trailer shows quite a bit of the crisp action, teasing what should look remarkable on the big screen in 3D. July is going to be a good month for Summer movies starting with this one and finishing with The Dark Knight Rises.

The Amazing Spider-Man hits theaters July 3rd, 2012.

Two days ago Terry Crews had teased the trailer for The Expendables 2 with a short 15 second clip of nothing but a bunch of explosions. The clip was nothing short of pointless. And the trailer for The Expendables 2 doesn’t make the actual film look that much better.
Behold, the trailer for The Expendables 2.

Everyone needs a paycheck, right? To me it feels like that’s what all these 1990’s action stars are going for here. Easy money. There have been a few updates to the cast like Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris. Besides that you can count on seeing the same guys from the first film.

To me, this movie should never have happened. I think Matt would agree (Editors Note: I do agree) judging from his review of The Expendables. The first one was fun to watch because of the cast, but overall the film was nothing special. “Stupid” would be the word I would use. But if there’s one thing the Hollywood machine does best its put out more of the same, even if no-one wants it. I think those who liked the first film are going to dig the sequel. These films are for people who go to movies for one thing and one thing only: action. Shoot em up, blow em up, non-stop action. But for those who appreciate films with density and narratives that require actual thought, don’t see this movie.

When it comes to films now-a-days, the hype and build up almost has to be bigger than the film itself. You’ve got to tease the shit out of the movie in order to get people in the door to see it. One of the oddest growing marketing phenomenons of late has been trailers for trailers. In my opinion, a very weird marketing tool. We’ll get a series of very short clips from a upcoming trailer in order to get us pumped to see the extended version. A great example would be Prometheus. They released a one minute teaser before releasing the full trailer a couple of weeks later, and that trailer was amazing as I pointed out in a previous post.

We now have another example of a trailer for a trailer with The Expendables 2 with Terry Crews. Hit the jump to check it out.

Here is the teaser for The Expendables 2.

This teaser gives us absolutely nothing new about the film with the exception of a few explosions. I counted eleven, which could be some sort of record for explosions in a trailer. But the idea here is pretty funny. It takes the timely marketing tool and shows it for what it really is, a commercial for a commercial. It’s paramount for these movie studios to do what ever they can to maximize revenue for their investments, and marketing is numero uno. The only purpose of trailers for trailers is to keep us salivating for more. Will The Expendables 2 be worth seeing? We’re going to have to wait til we see more to make that call.
