‘It’s Kind of a Funny Story’…

While seeing The American the other day (which was not great I might add), I saw a preview for the upcoming movie It’s Kind of a Funny Story. The trailer for the movie is not hot off the press so to speak, but my interest was sparked for this upcoming project by the trailer you can check out after the jump. So in light of my recent exposure to the newest Focus Features project, I thought a quick overview and the film’s trailer could intrigue readers to see It’s Kind of a Funny Story, hitting theaters this October.

The film is based on the book of the same title, written by Ned Vizzini. The story follows a young man named Craig who suffers from depression and checks himself into a psychiatric hospital. His experiences with the people he meets within the hospital setting is what makes this story worth telling. The book was inspired by Vizzini’s own brief experience with depression and treatment for the ailment.

It’s Kind of a Funny Story was written for the screen and directed by the duo of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The two met on the set of a student film awhile back, began dating, and have been collaborating on projects since. I can’t say I have ever heard of this type of work relationship before, but a romantic couple directing a movie must prove to be a colorful production. They have worked mostly on indie films, but consider this project a huge step. It’s Kind of a Funny Story has an interesting concept and will prove to be a character-driven story (something I love) being a product of Focus Features.

The film stars Zach Galifianakis, Emma Roberts (Blow), Lauren Graham, Jim Gaffigan, Jeremy Davies, Zoë Kravitz (daughter of Lenny Kravitz), and Keir Gilchrist as the film’s protagonist Craig.

Gruesome, Badass Unrated Trailer for ‘Hobo with a Shotgun’

Where the hell did this come from? A blood-spattered unrated trailer for Hobo with a Shotgun has debuted online and it looks bone-crunchingly awesome. As the title of the film would suggest, the story is pretty simple: an enraged hobo goes on a rampage with a shotgun, and brutal, B-movie goodness ensues. Hobo is the feature-length spawn of the contest-winning faux trailer from SXSW in 2007, where filmmakers submitted satirical B-movie trailers in the same vein of Machete, which was featured in Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’ Grindhouse.

Writer/director Jason Eisner makes his feature film debut with Hobo, starring veteran actor Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner, Batman Begins). It just looks frickin’ awesome. Check out the trailer below.

Hobo with a Shotgun is set to be releasesd sometime in 2011.

Official Trailer for ‘Fair Game’ Inspired by the True Valarie Plame CIA Story

The upcoming release Fair Game should not to be confused with the 1995 bomb starring Cindy Crawford and William Baldwin with the same title. The 90’s flick only banked $11 million on an estimated $50 million budget, scored a 13% approval on RottenTomatoes, and was nominated for Razzie awards for Worst Actress (Crawford) and Worst Screen Couple. The newest version of Fair Game stars the absolutely stunning Naomi Watts and Academy Award Winner Sean Penn (Milk). The project also has Doug Liman’s name attached to the director’s role, usually counting as a plus.His best works are: The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and Swingers. The 2010 version of Fair Game follows the real life events surrounding ex-CIA agent Valerie Plame.

The screenplay is adapted from her memoirs entitled Fair Game: My Life as a Spy, My Betrayal by the White House. I always enjoy thrillers involving the government and conspiracy, but the stakes are raised when the movie is based off true events. See the captivating trailer below.

After seeing the trailer, I am definitely checking Fair Game out at a midnight showing. This movie seems to nail the high risk aspect of the narrative. This should have the characters’ emotions pouring out on screen, especially when delivered from these two amazing actors (Watts and Penn). Seeing a married couple defending their family usually proves to fill a movie with tension, and the trailer seems to touch on that.

The script was written by Jez and John-Henry Butterworth. The brothers for the most part are unproven in the Hollywood game, but maybe this will be their big step up. Having Penn and Watts as the film’s leads gives me faith that the script is at least decent, otherwise the duo would not have signed on.

Fair Game is slated to hit theaters November 5, 2010. Check back for a review after it comes out.

Teaser Trailer for Danny Boyle’s ‘127 Hours’

The first teaser trailer for Danny Boyle’s upcoming survival drama 127 hours hit the web today (via In Contention), and it definitely looks very good, but I feel a bit underwhelmed. The film is inspired by the true story of Aaron Ralston, the American mountain climber who had to amputate his arm with a dull knife to escape being pinned by a giant boulder in 2003. You probably saw the news coverage and Ralston’s requisite talk show tour following his rescue. The script for the film was written by Simon Beafoy, whose last collaboration with Boyle on Slumdog Millionaire earned each of them an Oscar statue, for writing and directing respectively. James Franco stars in the film as Ralston, giving him the acting challenge/opportunity of a lifetime, as nearly an hour of the film contains zero dialogue. It’s just Franco and the camera.

Boyle is a fantastic filmmaker, responsible for bringing us classic films like Trainspotting, 28 Days later and The Beach, which this trailer reminds me A LOT of. It’s very fast-cutting, bright and crisp, with gorgeous cinematography. Classic Boyle. But they don’t get to the actual point of the film (Ralston getting trapped), until the very last second of the trailer, which I didn’t care for. See what I’m talking about below.

A significant majority of the trailer focuses on Ralston’’s Beach-esque antics with the two other hot chick climbers he meets (Amber Tamblyn and Kate Mara). Then after the brief dramatic build up in the last 10 seconds, they’re like, “oh yeah, by the way, he gets crushed by a giant boulder.” Obviously with Boyle, Beafoy, Franco and the subject matter, this will be an Oscar contender, but the trailer just didn’t do it for me. Not to mention the almost blatant advertising of Boyle’s filmogrophy at the beginning of the trailer. Yes, directors like James Cameron, Martin Scorsese and Danny Boyle will boast their previous credits during the trailer for a new film. But to play almost 30 seconds of footage from Slumdog to hammer into our heads, “the guy who directed this, directed that,” is a little much.

Anyway, I’m still very excited for this film, especially to see the kind of dramatic performance Franco pulled out. 127 Hours opens in theaters on November 5th.

Awesome Trailer for AMC’s Upcoming Zombie Show ‘The Walking Dead’

AMC has seriously stepped up their game over the last couple years, becoming direct competition with TV heavyweights HBO and Showtime, with their critically-acclaimed, edgy dramas that push the envelope. Mad Men and Breaking Bad have been winning Emmys left and right, and the new spy thriller Rubicon has gotten some very good buzz during its infancy. Now, AMC is bringing us the very first (I think) post-apocalyptic zombie television series, The Walking Dead. The series is created by The Shawshank Redemption and Green Mile director Frank Darabont, and is based on the comic series of the same title. Check out the trailer after the jump.

The show features the traditional formula of a post-apocalyptic zombie premise: Officer Rick Grimes, played by Andrew Lincoln, wakes up in a hospital days after getting injured (ala 28 Days Later) to find his town, and most likely the world, succumbed to the viral outbreak of the undead. He then strives to find his wife and daughter and presumably meets the rest of the cast on the way as he attempts to survive. I love zombie movies, so I’m all in on this. And I actually think a TV series about zombies could actually prove more successful, becuase the writers now have the time to focus on character development and explore the many desperate scenarios that would ensure while trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic setting, instead of having to shove it all into a two-hour film.

The trailer for The Walking Dead premiered at Comic-Con last month and is now available online for your viewing pleasure. Check it out.

The Walking Dead premieres on Halloween, October 31st, on AMC.

Movie Poster and Trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Black Swan’

And now the awards season has begun. In a few weeks, the studios who have “Oscar films” will be debuting many of them at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. One of those highly-anticipated Oscar films is Darren Aronofky’s Black Swan. Aronofsky has been making chilling, disturbing films that warp the brain since his controversial debut in 1998, Pi. He earned his stripes among film buffs with Pi and the brilliant Requiem for a Dream in 2000, but it wasn’t until The Wrestler resurrected Mickey Rourke’s career in 08′, that Aronofsky started to get the recognition that he deserves. This year, he’s got the Prestige-esque ballet thriller Black Swan, pitting Natalie Portman against Mila Kunis. Need I say more?

Aronofsky is a master at crafting foreboding atmospheres, with Black Swan being no exception. His color palette in the trailer stays true to the title of the film, creating a cold, unknown, creepy feel. As I alluded to previously, I get a distinct Prestige vibe here, because the film centers around two rivals in the same artistic profession dealing with some kind of supernatural foe, whilst set in a dark, disturbing environment. As The Prestige is #6 on my Top 10 of all time, this is a compliment of the highest order.

Vincent Cassel, the wonderful French actor who you’ll most likely recognize from the Ocean’s films, co-stars with Portman and Kunis. And from the trailer, I’d bet money on Portman’s name being thrown around a lot for Best Actress come Oscar time. Check out the trailer for Black Swan below.

The official plot description for the film goes something like this:

BLACK SWAN follows the story of Nina (Portman), a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her retired ballerina mother Erica (Barbara Hershey) who zealously supports her daughter’s professional ambition. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side with a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.

Black Swan will be making the respective film festival rounds over the next couple months and is set to be released wide in the U.S. on December 1st. Can’t wait!

Fascinating Teaser Trailer for Joaquin Phoenix Documentary, ‘I’m Still Here’

This is going to be so damn awesome. A couple weeks ago we brought you the first teaser poster for the Casey Affleck documentary I’m Still here, about the career transition of Joaquin Phoenix from actor to rapper. The first teaser trailer for the film has popped up online over at Yahoo! and it looks so friggin enthralling. As most of you know by now, Oscar-nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix seemingly went off the deep end a year and a half ago when he announced his retirement from acting to pursue his dream of being a rapper. He then showed up on Letterman looking like a homeless Reservoir Dog (see image above), and provided us with one of the most horrifically uncomfortable and buzzed about late night interviews in years. But a lot of people, including yours truly, are convinced this is all just a huge joke/sociological experiment. A seemingly brilliant, mesmerizing one at that.

In the beginning of the teaser, Phoenix is sitting at a table with a man who appears to be some kind of psychic or life thespian. His metaphorical monologue of comparing the typical rise of Hollywood success to drops of water in nature, narrates the montage of random imagery. The footage shows Phoenix going all over the world: partying, rapping, performing, signing autographs, on planes, in limos, at night clubs, fighting, drinking, hugging Diddy and much more. Check it out.

Is it real? Has Joaquin Phoenix seriously lost it? Is it all a massive joke that will have Phoenix and Affleck laughing at us all? Is he doing a character ala Andy Kaufman with Tony Clifton in the 70’s? Does it matter? Whatever happens, this is going to be one truly captivating piece of popular culture to witness. I’m Still Here opens in limited theaters (awwww) on September 10th.

Exciting New Trailer for Paul Haggis’ ‘The Next Three Days’ with Russell Crowe

The first trailer for The Next Three Days has made its way online at Yahoo! (via Collider) and it looks pretty damn good. The film comes from the brilliant mind of Paul Haggis; Oscar-winning screenwriter/director responsible for the likes of Crash, Million Dollar Baby, Letters from Iwo Jima and Casino Royale, just to name a few. No big deal, right? His latest film stars Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks as John and Lara Brennan, a typical married couple who’s lives get turned upside down when Lara is arrested and convicted of a murder she didn’t commit. Or did she? John then cooks up a crazy plan to break his beloved wife out of prison. Sounds pretty sweet to me.

The cast in the film is obviously awesome. It doesn’t need to be said, but Crowe is one of the top 10 actors working today, so I’ll see anything that he’s in. Elizabeth Banks is creating quite a versatile career for herself. We’ve seen her do comedy through her appearances on 30 Rock and her starring role in Kevin Smith’s Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Then she’s got biographical work on her resumé when she played Laura Bush in Oliver Stone’s W. Now she’s climbed all the way up the ladder to co-star with an Oscar-winning actor and for an Oscar-winning writer/director in the same film. Not bad Ms. Banks, not bad. Also making an appearance in The Next Three Days is the great Liam Neeson, seemingly as John’s prison-break confidant and advisor. The beautiful and talented Olivia Wilde has a supporting role as well. Check out the first official trailer for The Next Three Days below, with more to follow.

Looks great, right? A good ol’ fashion crime-thriller, in 2D, with a great cast and a great writer/director. What more do you want in a movie? The official plot synopsis for The Next Three Days goes something like this:

Life seems perfect for John Brennan until his wife, Lara, is arrested for a gruesome murder she says she didn’t commit. Three years into her sentence, John is struggling to hold his family together, raising their son and teaching at college while he pursues every means available to prove her innocence. With the rejection of their final appeal, Lara becomes suicidal and John decides there is only one possible, bearable solution: to break his wife out of prison. Refusing to be deterred by impossible odds or his own inexperience, John devises an elaborate escape plot and plunges into a dangerous and unfamiliar world, ultimately risking everything for the woman he loves.

The Next Three Days opens everywhere on November 19th.

Jackass 3D Trailer

The last time I watched Jackass, I was wearing DC skateboard shoes and five pounds of black eyeliner during the skater-chick style disaster of junior high. Simple Plan and Sum 41 blasted their hits on the radio while Steve-O, Johnny Knoxville and the rest of the gang ate gold fish, snorted wasabi and showed off self-inflicted paper cuts. Apparently, the good old days are back. Last year, the crew announced that the third Jackass would follow the 3D craze (read Barrett’s article on 3D movies). Now the trailer has been released. The film looks like it will follow in the footsteps of the many disturbing feats that came before it. The boys will slingshot porta potties, dress up like gorillas and basically gain as many injuries as humanly possible.

My concern is that, despite their childish behavior, receding hairlines give away the fact that most of the stunt veterans are in their mid 30’s and some, such as ringleader Johnny Knoxville, are pushing 40. I think it’s safe to say that I’ve outgrown Jackass. I just wish that the Jackass crew would outgrow their quest for stardom before one of them needs a hip replacement. First Trailer for ‘The Romantics’ with Katie Holmes and Josh Duhamel

I’m getting kind of a Rachel Getting Married meets Dan in Real Life vibe going on here. The first trailer for the ensemble romantic-drama, The Romantics, has popped up online and I think it looks pretty good. The film premiered at Sundance in January and features a unique, ecclectic cast, including: Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel Anna Paquin, Elijah Wood, Malin Akerman, Adam Brody, Jeremy Strong, Rebecca Lawrence, Dianna Agron and Candice Bergen. The film centers around the weekend getaway wedding of Tom (Duhamel) and Lila (Paquin), that becomes complicated when Tom’s ex, Laura (Holmes), stirs up old emotions that makes him question who he really wants to be with. Like I said, the cast is really interesting, and there is actually a lot of buzz surrounding Katie Holmes’ performance, with some early reviews calling it the best performance of her career. Which is good to see. Minus the Tom Cruise imprisonment and non-acting-related antics, she is a fine actress, so it’s good to see her in a dramatic role that will allow her to shine. The film is written and directed by Galt Niederhoffer, who also wrote the novel of which the film is based on. Check out the official trailer and poster for The Romantics below. [via Collider]

The official plot synopsis for The Romantics goes like this:

Over the course of one raucous night at a seaside wedding seven close friends, all members of a tight, eclectic college clique, reconvene to watch two of their own tie the knot. Laura (Katie Holmes) is maid of honor to Lila (Anna Paquin), her golden girl best friend. The two have long rivaled over the groom, Tom (Josh Duhamel). Friendships and alliances are tested and the love triangle comes to a head the night before the wedding, when the drunken friends frolic in the nearby surf and return to shore… without the groom. Based on the heralded novel by producer, novelist, director Galt Niederhoffer, THE ROMANTICS is a Zeitgeist love story and generational comedy that breathes new life into the genre and recaptures the camaraderie of youth.

The Romantics opens in theaters on September 10th.
