Could Idris Elba Be The Next James Bond?
ByThere comes a time when the torch must be passed on. When it comes to films, there is no other torch that can match the proverbial flame that belongs to the James Bond franchise, a franchise that has 23 feature length films (including Skyfall), and has had six very talented actors play the part of one of the most iconic characters ever. Daniel Craig is the most recent actor to join the very exclusive James Bond fraternity, but are producers already looking for a new face for 007?
Naomie Harris, a ‘Bond Girl’ in Skyfall, talked to The Huffington Post about the fact that Elba has already met with producers and had talks about taking over the role of 007 in the future.
I did a film with Idris (Mandela: A Walk To Freedom) and he said that he met (007 producer) Barbara Broccoli and that it does seem like there is a possibility in the future that there could very well be a black James Bond.
The role of 007 has always gone to men that are suave, sexy, cool, athletic, and half the time, British. Yeah, only three of the six actors to play James Bond were actually born in UK. Idris contains all of those qualities and more, and he fits the mold of an action star. So why not give him the role? Some have issue with the fact that Idris is black. When he was cast as Heimdall in Thor, some people were upset that a white comic book character would be played by a black man. For which I say, “Come on! Who cares?”
Now if the 007 producers were meeting Jamie Foxx, then you can say that Jamie simply doesn’t fit the part by any means. When Daniel Craig was cast as 007, there was a lot of backlash because he was the first Bond to be a blonde. If he can flourish in the role, so can an overly qualified black actor. The racial issue is a pointless one when you’re talking about an actor who can potentially give more to the role of James Bond than some of his predecessors. That’s why I would love to see Idris Elba as James Bond.
