Sam Raimi’s ‘Oz: The Great And Powerful’ Looks Like A Colorful Mess

By

Comic-Con is one of the coolest gatherings around when it comes to entertainment. During its three day run, we are given many speak peaks and clips of upcoming films, especially films that have a sci-fi / fantasy element to them. So when Sam Raimi and his cast of Oz The Great And Powerful took the stage, you could bet that we were going to get a preview of the fantasy epic. Take a gander at The Wizard Of Oz prequel after the jump.

Here’s the trailer for Oz: The Great And Powerful:

There is no doubtSam Raimi has a great eye and vision for massive fantasy movies like this one, but this movie looks like a mess. Visually, it looks stunning, but the plot is almost incomprehensible in this trailer. Obviously this is just the first taste of the film, but it’s meant to leave an good impression — to me this looks too much like Tim Burton’s cluster-of-a-film titled Alice In Wonderland in 2010.

The biggest letdown for me is that I know the plot for this film is going to be more complicated than it needs to be. The original Alice In Wonderland had such a simple plot. It was a girl trying to find her way home from a place where crazy, trippy stuff happens, very similar to the 1939 The Wizard Of Oz. In Burton’s version, Alice has a slew of duties to fulfill and storylines to complete. For me there was simply too much going on to be taken seriously. I have a feeling Oz: The Great And Powerful will run the same course.

Oz: The Great And Powerful features a great cast with James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz. It will be landing in theaters on March 8th, 2013.
