‘Robocop’ Viral Marketing Starts With Omnicorp Site, Teases New Robotic Armor
By Josh WingerThe viral marketing for the upcoming MGM reboot of Robocop has started, and way earlier than I would have expected. But I love surprises, especially like this one. MGM has put up a site for the fictional company, Omnicorp, that manufactures robots to help protect citizens. It is also the company that eventually transforms officer Alex Murphy into Robocop. The site hosts a video that goes through a short product line of Omnicorp’s robots. Hit the jump to see the video.
Check it.
The video teases a new product at the end called the RC-2000 which is most likely the new Robocop. At the bottom of the Omnicorp home page is a small picture with the same title of what looks to be a shoulder in a suit of black armor.
So it’s pretty safe to assume that the “RC” stands for Robocop. What’s surprising is that we are getting a peek at what the robotic suit will look like this far in advance. The film hasn’t even started filming yet. To me this is a sign that MGM is very confident about the new direction of Robocop, and judging from the amount of viral content on the Omnicorp site, they have been sitting on this stuff for a while. Remember, this reboot was supposed to be directed by Darren Aronofsky until he stepped out. Then the film was in limbo for a long time before Jose Padilha was selected to direct.
It’s going to be a while before we get any significant details on the Robocop reboot. The film is still only in the pre-production stages but is showing plenty of promise with this viral marketing start, a new director and an awesome cast with Samuel L Jackson, Gary Oldman, Hugh Laurie and Joel Kinnaman as the title characters.
Robocop is scheduled to release August 9th, 2013.
