Surprise Surprise… Michael Bay’s ‘Ninja Turtles’ Reboot Delayed Again
ByAs passionate Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans here at The Movie Mash, we have covered the reboot of this film quite closely. Of course Josh and I were quite upset (so were many other fans of the series) to hear Bay was going to change the origin of the green crime fighters. But despite the internet backlash, Bay was still confident he was proceeding the right way promising us his team was making a film that would not disappoint fans (despite disappointing us off the starting blocks). The Hollywood Reporter states the film’s release date has been pushed back from its tentative release date of December 2013 to May 2014. I’d suggest writing the new date down in pencil, not in ink — who knows if this new release date will stick?
The latest reported delay has to do with the script. I’m guessing some of it has to do with changing the whole origins of the already composed story. I’d have to think changing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into Alien Space Ninja Turtles is no easy task and probably one no one should take on. So maybe this is a sign they couldn’t get this dumb idea to pan out, maybe re-writes are in the future.
Paramount, the parent studio, still has made no comment on the hiatus. This is also the studio who recently pushed back G.I. Joe: Retaliation for a ’3D conversion’ and Brad Pitt’s World War Z for undisclosed reasons despite being in the middle of production. The good thing is that this Turtles movie is not currently shooting. It’s better to make fixes to the framework before moving into production. So no Ninja Turtles in 2013. Fans would be smart to not hold out for Spring of 2014 either — there has been much controversy shrouding this project, Paramount may not move forward with a substandard script (though common in Michael Bay projects).
