First Trailer For ‘The Great Gatsby’ Looks Good, But Will It Deliver?

By

Leonardo DiCaprio has acted for some of the greatest movie directors of all-time; Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan and Ridley Scott to name a few. One of his first shining moments came when he played Romeo in the Baz Luhrmann adaptation of Romeo And Juliet. The film proved the combo of Luhrmann and Leo is a very good one. Now they are back for the telling of one of the greatest novels of all-time, The Great Gatsby. Take a minute and check out the first trailer after the jump.

Here is the first trailer for The Great Gatsby.

This is a great first look at the film. It tells you everything you need to know about the story even if you haven’t read the book. I was a bit disappointed with the lack of artistic expression used by Luhrmann however. Usually you could take a look at any sequence and know that it’s a Baz Luhrmann film, because there’s always crazy cool shit going on. But this trailer didn’t make me feel that way as often as I would have hoped. The film still looks great, I was just expecting something a little different.

The cast is pretty damn near perfect. Tobey MaGuire is not my favorite, but I think he will make a perfect Nick Carraway. Carey Mulligan is great in just about everything she does and same can be said for Leo. If there is one thing this film needs no help with, it’s talent. When you look at the roster used to make this film, you’d think that it would have no problem being a sure fire hit. But will it deliver the goods?

This will be the fourth time The Great Gatsby has been brought to the screen. The last time we saw the tale of Jay Gatsby in theaters was in 1974 with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. The film received subpar reviews for lack of emotion throughout the film. Usually Baz Luhrmann doesn’t have any issue conveying emotion while using literal visual art in the process. But The Great Gatsby has been done by other talented artists and failed. Some stories are better left on the pages than on the screen.

The Great Gatsby is scheduled to be released on December 25th, 2012.
