Tim Roth and Cillian Murphy Signed Onto ‘Broken’

By

A potentially brilliant adaptation of Daniel Clay’s novel, Broken, will begin production under the same title next month in the U.K. (via TheHollywoodReporter). The screenplay was written by Mark O’Rowe and will be the first feature film that the acclaimed theater director, Rufus Norris, has ever directed. Tim Roth and Cillian Murphy have recently been cast for starring roles in the film. The story is about a little girl who witnesses an attack in her neighborhood, while examining the repercussions it has on her and those involved. Here is the book jacket description (via Amazon):

“Until that fateful afternoon, Skunk Cunningham had been a normal little girl, playing on the curb in front of her house. Rick Buckley had been a normal geeky teenager, hosing off his brand-new car. Bob Oswald had been a normal sociopathic single father of five slutty daughters, charging furiously down the sidewalk. Then Bob was beating Rick to a bloody pulp, right there in the Buckleys’ driveway, and life on Drummond Square was never the same again.

Inspired by Harper Lee’s classic To Kill a Mockingbird, Clay’s brilliantly observed and darkly funny novel follows the sudden unraveling of a suburban community after a single act of thoughtless cruelty.”

It’s exciting news to have Tim Roth and Cillian Murphy committing to the film, since the two have been so busy. Roth has just come out of his third season of Lie to Me and will be starring in FOX‘s Arbitrage next year. Murphy is anticipating the release of his sci-fi thriller, In Time on October 28th, and has several other projects lined up for 2012. Rumors continue to float around about him playing the role of Dr. Jonothan Crane/Scarecrow in the The Dark Knight Rises and he is signed on for the thriller Red Lights. Other talent signed on to Broken include: Rory Kinnear, Robert Emms, Zana Marjanovic, Bill Milner and Eloise Laurence. Eloise Laurence is apparently new to the business, so it should be an interesting cast.

If you like dark humor, this film will be right up your alley. For now, we will have to patiently wait for more on the adaptation of Broken.
