Natalie Portman is ‘The Other Woman’
ByIf you are a movie-goer seeking intense drama flicks, Don Roos’s The Other Woman should be added to your list. If Don Roos’s Marley and Me left you sobbing at the theater, this film will not be any different. The Other Woman follows a theme similar to Rabbit Hole, which has been playing in select theaters the past week and a half. In The Other Woman, Natalie Portman plays the role of Emilia Greenleaf. She is deemed a homewrecker because she has an affair with a man named Jack (Scott Cohen) and breaks up his marriage with up his wife Carolyne (Lisa Kudrow). Cohen and Portman are eventually wed and have a child of their own, who tragically dies of SIDS.
The trauma leaves Portman in a depressed state following her through the various stages of dealing with the loss. During her healing process she has a hard time interacting with her stepson, who in turn builds up a force of resentment toward his grieving stepmother. All the while, Kudrow is still hoping Cohen’s “new family” will fall apart.

The Other Woman originally cast Jennifer Lopez for the role of Emilia Greenleaf in 2007; however, that fell through and Portman took over the role in the midst of Lopez leaving (via Moviefone). The film is based off Ayelet Waldman’s novel, Love and Other Impossible Pursuits. In fact, the movie originally upheld the same title, but was eventually changed. I think the original title gave the film more depth from the get-go, so I am not sure why the title was changed.
Screen Daily said the performances are well done in the film, but reports the movie is somewhat clichéd. That comes as no surprise, because most movies surrounding loss are clichéd. The Other Woman seems like a film up for personal interpretation on its cliché level.
Moviefone has pointed out that it is probably not a coincidence The Other Woman and Rabbit Hole are being featured so close to each other. The Other Woman will be featured On Demand January first, and will be hitting select theaters for a limited time in February.
