Nolan Announces ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ as Title of the Next Batman, No Riddler AND No 3D

By

Holy Jeebus, the Batman news floodgates have officially burst open. Just this morning we posted news that Christopher Nolan was meeting with a shortlist of unnamed young actresses about a “lead female role” in the then-untitled next Batman film. What a difference six hours makes, as Geoff Boucher of LA Times’ Hero Complex has confirmed with Mr. Nolan that the title of the next Batman film will be The Dark Knight Rises.

I know what you’re thinking: “meh,” right? It’s definitely not the most inspired title for a film I’ve ever seen. And the use of the word “rise” in franchise sequels has definitely been done before. But no matter how much clout Nolan has over at Warner Bros., I guarantee you they sat him down and said, “look, we’ll give you $500 million and whatever you want to make this movie, but it has to have The Dark Knight in the title.” There’s no way they’re going to risk confusing casual movie goers that this new Batman film isn’t some sort of new reboot or remake. I remember how shocked I was at a Fandango poll right after TDK came out in 2008 at the surprising number of people who didn’t know that TDK was the sequel to Batman Begins.  I’m sure many of you were thinking that The Dark Knight Returns just sounds a lot better coming off the tongue. Well, there’s that little graphic novel from Frank Miller that might’ve caused some problems if Nolan & Co. tried to go that route. Just give it time. I know I wasn’t exactly thrilled with Batman Begins when that title was announced. And now…

Also, not only did Nolan bless us with the title of the film, but clued us into who the villain(s) could be via process of elimination. He confirmed with Mr. Boucher that there will be no Riddler and that he will again use IMAX technology as he did in TDK, resulting in a NO 3D zone surrounding The Dark Knight Rises. He apparently has enough clout with the studio to where he convinced them that IMAX/2D is the best for the film in every way. HALLELUJAH!!!

The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20, 2012.

Thank God for Nolan, and thank God for no 3D…

There will always be a problem with comic books adapted to movies; because, who do you please? The devoted comic fan… or the casual movie goer?? Fortunately that will never be a problem with Nolan at the helm… Does title matter? Maybe to some…

If you are looking for good, no, great Batman reading… check the following… Batman: The Long Hallowen… Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, (dont read Frank Millers The Dark Knight Srikes Again, pleeeease) or Batman: Knightfall A Novel by Dennis O'Neil

I know I will catch flack for this, but Inception suuuuucked!!!! I like movies I Want to see twice, not movies I Have to see twice.

Amen to the no 3D and RISE…from now on i encourage all Mashers to refer to TDKR as only “RISE”…

I am already freaking out about this movie for all the obvious reasons but add Tom Hardy to the mix and I have to get a change of pants…

Kevin, i respect your unique view point of “I like movies I Want to see twice, not movies I Have to see twice.” but all movie buffs are different.
In regards to the title, i like it…i think it's much better than “returns”. Not only did Bruce Wayne/Batman have to sacrifice “kill” his reputation by taking the blame for Harvey's murderous rampage but he also had to risk the exposure that comes from being Gotham's most wanted.

Whose everyone's pick for the villian… so far Freeze and Riddler have been ruled out…
