‘Dexter’ Early Cuts: Dark Echo Chapters
ByBeing a huge fan of the Showtime series Dexter, I was pumped to see television’s greatest show branching out with a small web-based video narrative. The story picks up before we have ever seen Dexter before by showing the calculated killer in his college days. Faithful viewers of the show can recognize his raw technique in the way he subdues his chosen victims; Dexter uses an arms length of piano wire as opposed to the subtle and perfected use of M99 in a syringe. The short story comes in six parts, and to see them and my thoughts you will have to hit the jump.
While the web series is animated with the artistic craftsmanship of David Mack and the award winning Bill Sienkiwicz , the calm yet lethal voice of Michael C. Hall can still be heard. The story plays out in six parts following the young “Dark Defender” just after Harry dies leaving Dexter to follow the code his father laid out for him on his own. Check out the first video below, and if you like it, you can continue watching by clicking on the subsequent videos.
Personally, I didn’t love the animation. While I am sure this was the artists’ aesthetic choice to draw the animation this way, I thought it looked cheap and poorly constructed. It was more abstract which forced me to pay more attention to the story and Michael C. Hall’s voice, but I would still like a little more visual detail than what was given.
The thing that really kept me clicking along to watch all six episodes was a new story profiling Dexter before he becomes the perfectionist killer he is today (not to mention I love everything Dexter). So check out the videos if you are or aren’t a fan of the show. Maybe by watching these you will get into television’s greatest show, Dexter.
