‘Deathly Hallows Part 1’ Will NOT Be Released in 3D
ByI consider this nugget of news a positive one for any true movie fan. Waves of marginal 3D movies have hit the market recently in an attempt by the film studios to gouge fans out of their money (or is it to bring us “into” the movie?). It’s good to see a studio finally standing up for quality in films and the fans who like to see them. Warner Bros. is that studio sticking for all of us fans out there. While they have not always had our best interests at heart demonstrated by the release of the atrocious looking Clash of the Titans, I think they learned their lesson the hard way regarding sub-par looking 3D. The 3D in that film was ripped by critics and fans alike.
Announced on Friday was news that Warner Bros. would not be presenting Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 in 3D. This is good news for anyone who has seen movies presented in 3D via the post production conversion process. For those who do not understand the difference, this means the movie was not shot in 3D like Avatar, but converted to 3D from a computer process. This usually does not yield quality 3D resulting in an atrocious looking picture that destroys all sense of enjoyment because you are sitting there thinking, “This looks like absolute sh*t, I have a headache.” Case in point was Clash of the Titans, a film that looked so horrible I spent the duration in disbelief that Warner Bros. actually gave the o.k. for the 3D version of the movie to hit theater screens across America.
Warner Bros. worked on converting the Deathly Hallows Part 1 to 3D through the post production process, but decided to axe the conversion upon realizing they could not get a product they could stand behind before the movie hit theaters in November. The studio released this statement regarding the decision.
We will not have a completed 3D version of the film within our release date window…Despite everyone’s best efforts, we were unable to convert the film in its entirety and meet the highest standards of quality. We do not want to disappoint fans who have long-anticipated the conclusion of this extraordinary journey.
This news is especially rewarding for a Potter fan like me. As many of us die-hard muggles remember with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Warner Bros. pushed back the release date of the movie ten months to take advantage of the lucrative summer box office receipts as opposed to the fall season take. I was expecting news of the studio pushing Deathly Hallows back to facilitate the completion of the 3D conversion, not abandoning the process altogether. Considering that studios charge an extra three bucks a ticket for 3D, and the fact Warner Bros. already dumped a ton of money into the conversion, it shocked me to hear this news. My guess is the Deathly Hallows 3D footage must have looked like Amy Winehouse’s face at her best (which is not good mind you) for the studio executives to pull the plug on the conversion.
Before I go, I wanted to share a link to more Deathly Hallows posters that have dropped online recently. Mugglenet has the spread covered on their site. The posters are extreme close-ups of Voldemort, Bellatrix Lestrange, and the trio. The collaboration of Deathly Hallows movie posters are worth a gander. The Voldemort poster (seen above) is my favorite yet.
Lastly, for those interested in taking a look into the brilliant storytelling mind of J.K. Rowling, take a peek at her notes regrading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Rowling draws a grid to map out the progression of the story throughout the book. This really is a gem for any Harry Potter nerd, so check it out.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 hits theaters November 19th, 2010 and Part 2 drops July 15th, 2011. Warner Bros. still plans to release Part 2 in 3D.
