Underwhelming First Trailer for ‘The Tourist’ with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp

By

You’d think that the first teaming up of THE, not “two of the,” THE two biggest movie stars on the planet in a highly-anticipated action-thriller, the first trailer should generate automatic mind explosions of awesomeness. But alas, here we are with the first “meh” trailer for The Tourist, starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t look bat at all, and I will surely see it in theaters; it does, however, look like every other cliche, fish out of water, identity-shifting, European location-spanning, romantic-thriller, with a dab of comedy…that we’ve all seen a thousand times.

The film was written by Gosford Park scribe Julian Fellowes, and directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. Yes, THAT Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. This brief synopsis for The Tourist should make the general plot of the film crystal clear for you:

Frank Taylor (Depp) is an American tourist visiting Italy to mend a broken heart. Elise (Jolie) is an extraordinary woman who deliberately crosses his path.

Okay, so that didn’t give us much information. But based on the trailer, it seems as though Jolie manipulates Depp, using her Femme fatale sexuality, to stick him smack dab in the middle of some European mob antics involving mistaken identities, Interpol heat, and surely a sh*tload of money. Anyway, check out the trailer below, with more to follow.

See what I mean? “Meh,” right? There was some humorous moments and some serviceable action sequences, but other than that, I’m just not that into it. I do like the fact that Depp is taking a break from his Tim Burton “how can I top the last psycho character I did?” roles, and playing a regular Joe caught in the middle of a crazy situation. Oh well, here’s hoping that I’ll be proven wrong and this movie is surprisingly awesome.

The Tourist opens everywhere December 10th.
