Rant: ‘Let Me In’ TV Spots Seem to be Very Misleading

By

As we have all seen over the past few years, vampires are freakin’ everywhere.  Television, books, movies, there is no escaping the bloodsucking fad and that has some people out there really peeved.  I cannot say that I blame them when I see most of the schlock that is coming out with vamps as moody, whiney emo kids.  However, every craze has its silver lining and for the vampire fad that came a few years ago with a little Swedish film called Let the Right One In.

Based on the best seller by the same name penned by John Ajvide Lindqvist in 2004, the film follows the weak Oskar as he gets bullied at school.  One fateful day a new girl moves in next door, a girl who seems immune to the biting cold of Swedish winters.  Long story short, she’s a vampire and he falls in love.  The film and the book are both amazing explorations of a childhood romance that is more pure and more doomed than any Shakespearean couple.  Let me just say, there is a very good reason why it is number 4 on my list of favorite films.

Okay, rant time.  Let The Right One In is being remade as Let Me In starring Chloe Moretz (of recent Kick-Ass fame) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (fresh off The Road).  I’m going to take the high road here, no complaining about how awesome the original is and that it does not need an English remake.  That dead horse has been kicked enough.  My complaint is specifically with the second TV spot that came out recently, which you can see below.

I have nothing but confidence in director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield).  Based on the theatrical trailers I have seen it looks like he will maintain the love story and tenderness of the original and the book.  The TV spot however seems to be deliberately misleading.  There is no hint of love or kindness in the little girl, she is depicted as a, get this, a monster!  Yes she’s a vampire, yes vampires are monsters, but this story is about something more.  The fact that she is undead is a side note of a very compelling tale about young love.  A story that is being downplayed to make the movie appear like more of a horror thriller.

Now, I have not seen the remake so maybe it has been retooled into a straight horror film but I would like to think that Reeves would have more respect for the source material.  I’m trying to steer clear of classic fan boy cynicism; I do think that Reeves will do a great job with this film but do NOT base whether or not you will see this film based on the second TV spot, watch the theatrical trailer please.  Let Me In hits theaters October 1st.
