‘It’s Kind of a Funny Story’…

By

While seeing The American the other day (which was not great I might add), I saw a preview for the upcoming movie It’s Kind of a Funny Story. The trailer for the movie is not hot off the press so to speak, but my interest was sparked for this upcoming project by the trailer you can check out after the jump.  So in light of my recent exposure to the newest Focus Features project, I thought a quick overview and the film’s trailer could intrigue readers to see It’s Kind of a Funny Story, hitting theaters this October.

The film is based on the book of the same title, written by Ned Vizzini. The story follows a young man named Craig who suffers from depression and checks himself into a psychiatric hospital. His experiences with the people he meets within the hospital setting is what makes this story worth telling. The book was inspired by Vizzini’s own brief experience with depression and treatment for the ailment.

It’s Kind of a Funny Story was written for the screen and directed by the duo of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The two met on the set of a student film awhile back, began dating, and have been collaborating on projects since. I can’t say I have ever heard of this type of work relationship before, but a romantic couple directing a movie must prove to be a colorful production. They have worked mostly on indie films, but consider this project a huge step. It’s Kind of a Funny Story has an interesting concept and will prove to be a character-driven story (something I love) being a product of Focus Features.

The film stars Zach Galifianakis, Emma Roberts (Blow), Lauren Graham, Jim Gaffigan, Jeremy Davies, Zoë Kravitz (daughter of Lenny Kravitz), and Keir Gilchrist as the film’s protagonist Craig.

Check out the official full-length trailer below.

Look for It’s Kind of a Funny Story in theaters October 8th, 2010.

Sounds like it will be a movie with not only a great cast, but also a great soundtrack. Ida Maria's “Oh My God” in the trailer fits perfect. The opening words to the song are “oh my god, find a cure for my life” and the story is about Craig going through some type of depression. Therefore, he would be looking for that cure, much like the song. I'm sure the trailer is going to blow up Ida Maria's popularity, although she is an indie artists appreciated by many already. Also, I think the film itself will have a lot to offer for people who appreciate character development over the course of a film (like you mentioned). It seems like a quirky and humorous yet dramatic flick. I hope it lives up to the intrigue it has sparked on my end here, can't wait to see it!

Zach Galifiankis is really big right now and there is no doubt about that after the hangover but the best thing is that he is making great career choices. He is hilarious and people love that side of him so he does outrageous comedies (Dinner for Schmucks, Youth in Revolt, Due Date) but he also is going to branch out with this movie and other like his short role in Up in the Air and also the comedic-but-different character in Bored to Death.
