By

Probably not. But when she posted a picture on her website a few days ago showing off her recently super short new hairdo, the gossip rags went k-a-raazy speculating that she did so because she intended to audition for David Fincher’s American remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; which is of course based on the original Swedish film from last year, which is of course based on the worldwide book series phenomenon. Many young actresses have been rumored for the lead role of Lisbeth Salander, from Ellen Page to Emily Browning, but no casting has been confirmed other than Daniel Craig and Robin Wright. I have not read the book yet, nor seen the original Swedish version of the film, but the Salander character is described as “gritty” and “tough as nails,” a major shift in acting demand from the sweet Hermione Granger role she’s played in the Harry Potter films over the last decade. But all of this appears to be a wild goose chase, as representatives for Watson quickly dismissed the rumor, saying it’s “absolutely false on all accounts.” That doesn’t necessarily mean that Watson would never be considered for the role, as dismissing casting rumors is a daily task for Hollywood publicists and agents, but for now, it looks like we’ll have to wait for an official casting announcement.

David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is currently in pre-production, with a release date set for sometime in 2011.
