What if Danny Elfman Did the Score for ‘Batman Begins’?

By

Pheeeew, thank God that question doesn’t have to seriously be considered. I mean, I am a certified BAT-nerd and love both Tim Burton’s Batmans and Christopher Nolan’s Batmans, but the former version is obviously more campy and fantastical than the latter, and that is perfectly represented in the musical score from each. So what if Danny Elfman’s iconic theme from the original 1989 Batman had been used for Christopher Nolan’s 2005 reboot Batman Begins? The results are actually quite funny.

Hans Zimmer’s scores for Begins and The Dark Knight are brilliantly dark, serious and thrilling, almost acting as a supporting character to both. Think of the tension-building, escalating string music that came on whenever the Joker was about to cause maniacal mayhem. It’s pretty important. So when you take that out, and replace it with Elfman’s score that’s much more, shall I say, “over-the-top?” it makes it look ridiculous, thus also, hilarious. Don’t get me wrong, I love Elfman’s score for Burton’s Batmans, but the music defines the tone of the film, and Batman Begins and Elfman DO NOT, mix well.
