Netflix This: Totally Awesome
By
I’m a sucker for spoof movies. The GOOD ones, that is. I’m talking about Airplane, The Naked Gun trilogy, Not Another Teen Movie, Scary Movie (the first one), etc. Not the cinematic abominations that are Date Movie, Epic Movie, Disaster Movie, and all that other crap. There’s one spoof movie, that I’m sure some of you have seen, but a lot of you probably haven’t even heard of, and that’s Totally Awesome. It’s a hilarious spoof-parody, that mocks all the cliche elements of movies from the 1980s. It stars Mikey day (from MTV’s Wild n’ Out), Chris Kattan, Tracy Morgan and a slew of other funny actors. The movie is ridiculously stupid, outrageous and utterly hilarious.
It premiered as a VH1 original movie back in 2006, and I’ve seen it so many times, that I thought people who share my love for good spoof movies, need to hear about it. The movie follows brother and sister Charlie (Day) and Lori (Dominique Swain), who move with their family to a new town and a new high school. Lori is a dancing-obsessed freshman, who falls in love with the school’s dancing-obsessed janitor, Gabriel (Kattan). Dancing in the town is outlawed due to a previous horrific tragedy (making fun of Footloose), so Gabriel and Lori are forced to dance their hearts out in a secret warehouse on the edge of town.
While all this is going on, Charlie is having trouble fitting in to his new high school setting. He’s labeled a complete loser and longs for the popular cheerleader, Kimberly (Brittany Daniel). To try and become “cool,” he seeks out the help of a local hip-hop wannabe, played hilariously by Tracy Morgan. The movie then just gets completely ridiculous and makes you laugh the whole way though. The stand-out performance of the movie comes from Kimberly’s popular, douche-bag boyfriend, Kipp, played by the hysterical Joey Kern. My friends and I who love this movie, constantly quote lines from Kipp to this day, they’re THAT funny.
The movie mocks all your favorite 80s movies, including: Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Footloose, The Karate Kid, The Breakfast Club, and many more. If you’re in the mood for a stupid, dumb, hilarious, mindless, well-crafted and hilarious spoof movie, Netlfix Totally Awesome.
I’ve embedded a montage of the funniest scenes featuring Tracy Morgan to wet your appetite. Check it out.
