In this edition of Netflix This comes an old-school thriller. I don’t think it needs to be stated anymore, but Christopher Nolan is my favorite director of all time. Most of you have probably seen the films from his current flawless track record : Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige and The Dark Knight. But most, if not all of you have probably heard of the film that started it all, Following. It’s a brilliant, twisted neo-noir thriller that showcases a young writer/director’s talent for crafting captivating characters and story.

Nolan never went to film school and learned everything he knows from just MAKING movies. Following was released in 1999 with a production budget of just $6,000. The story “follows” a struggling young writer who takes to following strangers around the streets of London in order to find inspiration for his new novel. He mistakenly begins to follow a professional thief who, in-turn, invites the young writer to accompany him on various burglaries. The writer gets a thrill out of the burglaries and begins to take on the habits and lifestyle of a thief and a stalker. Then a series of dangerous and suspicious events get the young writer into some hot water as he must find a way out.

It’s just over an hour long, but packs a major punch of twisted and complicated story-telling; Nolan at his best. All of the actors are unknowns, but all give captivating performances. If you’re a fan of Christopher Nolan, or are just looking for a brilliant, old-school thriller to rent, I 1,000% recommend you check out Following.
