Patrick Bateman Looks To Murder Broadway With American Psycho: The Musical
ByI think, that I’m ecstatic by this. I mean, American Psycho is tied with The Dark Knight as my favorite movie of all time. I’m looking at a framed poster of the film, featuring Patrick Bateman holding a butcher knife, hanging above my TV as I type. It is probably THE most-quoted and referred to film between my circle of friends. It’s such a unique, twisted, funny and thrilling psychological mind-F, featuring a powerhouse, career-making performance by Mr. Christian Bale. So, when Variety reports that Broadway producers are taking the necessary steps to put together a musical version of this masterpiece novel-turned film, I don’t know how to react.
On one hand, I’d love it if they would just leave the property alone; unlike the idiot Hollywood suits did with American Psycho II: All American Girl, starring Mila Kunis and William Shatner back in 02′. On the other hand, if there was any sort of remake or adaptation that could continue the integrity of the book and original film adaptation, I think a musical COULD be a good idea. I mean, a major element of the film was Bateman’s critical infatuation of 80’s pop music and how it influenced society. Would we be able to see “Hip To Be Square” incorporated into a musical number right before Bateman slices up Paul Allen with an axe? The show’s producers say only to “expect the original score to share that ’80s flavor.” Flavor? I guess maybe they are still in the beginning stages and can’t elaborate too much, but I hope “flavor” means “soaked in 80’s.”
Singer/song-writer/Tony-winner for Spring Awakening, Duncan Sheik, is set to write the songs. HBO’s Big Love screenwriter, Roberto Aguire-Sacasa, is set to pen the script. And since we’re just hearing about who’s doing what with this production, don’t expect American Psycho: The Musical to be murdering the stage anytime soon.
How do you think some of these scenes will translate to the Broadway stage?
