Worthington On A Roll; Set To Play Dracula In New Alex Proyas Film
ByWhat a year Sam Worthington is having. First he got to star along Christian Bale as the new Terminator in the highly over-criticized Terminator Salvation last May. Then, of course, he got the lead role in that little indie, low-budget film Avatar; which just became the highest-grossing film off all time. He’s also the lead in another upcoming inevitable blockbuster, Clash of the Titans (which is currently being converted for 3-D). That kind of success in eight months would be enough to run anyone ragged, but Sam isn’t slowing down one bit. THR’s Heat Vision blog has now confirmed that Worthington is going challenge himself unlike anything he’s done yet. That’s right, Dracula.
Worthington will be donning the iconic fangs in Alex Proyas’ (Dark City, I, Robot, Knowing) latest project, Dracula Year Zero. The film is a “period vampire epic” that explores the origin of Dracula, weaving vampire mythology with the true history of Prince Vlad the Impaler. It seeks to depict Dracula as a flawed hero in a tragic love story set in a dark age of magic and war.
The most recent iconic portrayal of Dracula was by the great Gary Oldman back 1992 with Bram Stoker’s Dracula, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. That film won several Academy Awards and terrified millions of movie goers (including my sister). With his already ridiculous resume at the ripe age of 34, I think it’s a safe bet to say that Sam Worthington will be around for a long time.
