Rabs’ Review: ‘Zombieland’ Is The Most Fun I’ve Had At the Theater This Year, By Far

By

ZOMBIELAND

Zombieland is certainly not the best movie of the year. Star Trek had superior direction, District 9 had a more original concept, but Zombieland will having you laughing and cheering for 90 minutes straight, and will be the most fun you’ll have at the theaters this year. It is utterly hilarious and filled with the awesome blood and guts that you would expect and want from a zombie movie. The cast is perfect, with Woody Harrelson giving one of his funniest performances in years. Zombieland is quite simply, a complete blast.

The title Zombieland is quite literal when explaining the story. It takes place in present day, where a virus outbreak causes most of the world to suffer from uncontrollable rage, an obsolete cognitive process and a taste for human flesh. Basically, almost everyone on Earth is now a zombie, and the characters in the film refer to the planet’s “post-zombie state” as Zombieland. The subsequent series of events unfold as the four main characters take a road trip across the country to L.A. for salvation, encountering hysterical blood and guts along the way.

The cast is pitch-perfect and display impressive chemistry while together on screen. Jesse Eisenberg (Adventureland) plays Columbus, an intelligent, awkward, virgin sarcastic college student (the character he always plays; and I mean that in a good way). Woody Harrelson plays Tallahassee, (the cast refers to each other based on where they’re from) a hick-ish loner who loves guns, killing zombies and twinkies. Harrelson is absolutely hysterical in this film, and as I alluded to earlier, gives his funniest performances since Kingpin. “Well look at you, you peppy little spit fuck.” The gorgeous up-and-coming Emma Stone (Superbad) plays Witchita and Academy-Award nominee Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) plays her younger sister. These girls are smart and cunning grifters who have one rule:  “don’t trust anyone.”

ZOMBIELAND

Obviously this rule of theirs causes some problems when they encounter the tag-team of Columbus and Tallahassee, as the odd couple duo gets burned a couple of times by the girls with the puppy dog eyes. Their destinies eventually cross paths in a positive manner as everyone in the four-some realize that all they have is each other.

One of the best parts of Zombieland is Columbus’ set of rules to survive Zombieland; a list that he is constantly adding to after encountering close calls with danger. The list is referred to constantly in the film with Columbus’ voice-over narration whenever a fat Zombie slob pops out of nowhere drooling blood everywhere: “Rule #8: Double Tap” You’ll see what I mean when you see it.

Another great part of the film  is one of the funniest cameos I’ve seen in years by a big name comedy legend, who hysterically plays himself. Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita and Little Rock make their way to Hollywood because of “rumbling rumors” that say the city is Zombie-free. Upon arriving, they pick up some star maps and decide to seek refuge in the abandoned mansions of America’s biggest movie stars. Might as well right? Upon combating suggestions among the youngsters, i.e. Tom Cruise’s house, Brad Pitt’s house, etc.; Tallahassee then gets a light bulb over his head and decides to take the crew to his favorite actor off all time’s luxurious Hollywood mansion. I won’t say who this person is, but their cameo as them self is LOL hilarious and is one of the funniest parts of the movie.

I honestly cannot find one single flaw with this movie. The writing is hysterical, the performances are awesome, the story is absurdly fun and the action is badass. The reason I didn’t give it an A+ rating is because of my first statement, as it not being the “best” movie of the year.” But as a Zombie, blood-bath comedy, it is one of the best of the genre and is the funnest times you’ll have at the theater all year.

What Should You Do? Absolutely see it, but make sure you go with a big group of friends; it’ll be a lot more fun.

Maybe I'll go see it tonight. Does Amber Heard not have a big role in this movie as 406?

She has almost no role TSchaub. She does however play an awesome part in the movie. BG, I walked out of this movie with the exact same grade on my mind. A for how amazing this movie was with its narrative, comedic, and even at times freighting story lines. This movie was so awesome I will definitely see it again.

I was hoping for a bigger part for her, but oh well. Were you guys fans of Eisenberg in Adventureland? That was the first movie I had seen him in.

i wasnt so sure about this movie but the reviews are good and i like the cast. As you said, i saw eisenberg in Adventureland and i liked him. He reminded me of a less awkward michael cera. he was good. i guess he is now playing Mark Zuckerberg in the Facebook movie "The Social Network". should be interesting.

I personally loved Adventureland. I thought it was one of the more original comedies of the year. The comedy isn't laugh out loud, but its subtitle and fits the situations in the film. There is a nice little love story, and Eisenberg definitely has some star power in Adventureland….I wrote a review when I saw it way back when.

I agree with you about Adventureland being more original. I may have to watch it again, but I kept thinking that this guy was a Michael Cera knockoff. I also thought the pace of the movie was kinda slow moving, but that could have been cause I was drinking before hand…

Ha ha yeah drinking usually does not help people to sit still for a movie. That is what I have heard lots of people say about Jesse, that he is just like Cera. Though I definitely see the obvious similarities I think they are both good actors. I doubt either is trying to be like the other, it just probably comes out that way because they are similar people. I think they are both awesome anyway so I have no problem. Jesse is the better actor and Michael is funnier. Adventureland has a ton of subtle comedy, especially stuff that stems from the 80's like the constant playing of Amadeus!

For some reason its not showing what you had replied back Matt on here, but I saw what you wrote on my BlackBerry so I'll just respond this way. I think Jesse plays his role well and it seems he has a similar role in Zombieland, which I still haven't seen yet! I thought he was good in Adventureland, but just wanted to say my first observation was he reminded me of Michael Cera. I actually went and downloaded the Amadeus song after I watched that movie.
