Superhero Movie News! Leo Being Recruited for Spawn & First Glance at Rourke as Whiplash in IM2
By
Let’s first clear a few things as a lot of you might be super excited or really pissed that Leo is going to be playing Spawn in either a remake or a sequel to 1997′s effects-driven superhero flick Spawn. Let me reassure you that Leo WILL NOT has not committed, nor is he being pursued to play the hell-condemned anti-hero lead. Leo IS, however, being aggressively pursued by Spawn writer and creator Todd McFarlane to be “the guy chasing Spawn,” who is the lead in this potential reboot.
McFarlane spoke with MTV about his lofty goal of wooing one of the busiest actors in Hollywood to participate in his new Spawn flick saying:
“The main character isn’t Spawn, per se, it’s the guy chasing Spawn, and I’ve always had Leo in the back of my mind. It’s a big wish, but his dad was a big fan of underground comic books and he came from that.”
That is a pretty big wish, considering Leo is booked for the next couple years with: Inception, Shutter Island, The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt and The Chancellor Manuscript, taking us all the way to the end of 2011. It might be just me, but with pre-production, filming, traveling and promotion, I don’t think Leo is going to have time to pick up a tarnished superhero franchise. Although Spawn was entertaining visually, its story and execution was horrible and Michael Jai White is too intense for his own good. So I guess all I can say for now is, we’ll see.
Up next is the first photo of the main villain in the highly-anticipated Iron Man 2. It is currently in production and as many of you may know, the comeback kid himself Mickey Rourke is playing Whiplash, a Soviet scientist who is the worlds foremost expert on electricity. Whiplash has three retractable steel whips on each arm and wears a padded costume that provides some protection from physical damage. Now, if you clicked on the Whiplash link, you may be confused as the character Whiplash was actually a girl in the comic books. Well, the original villain that was going to be included by Favreau in IM2 was Crimson Dynamo, but do to his near identical similarities to Iron Man in abilities, producers decided to combine the human elements of Crimson Dynamo and the super-power elements of Whiplash. Good decision. As they usually do, USA Today has the first photo of Mickey Rourke on the set of IM2 as Whiplash. It looks kind of cool, but I hope that there is more to his abilities, because the mechanical components of his gear on just his bare skin looks kind of lame sauce. We’ll see.
