Nolan’s “INCEPTION” Has a $200 Million Budget, To Film In Canada…F Yeah!
By
Can I get a “F Yeah!”? Finally, some Inception news. For Movie Mashers who have been loyal readers since the beginning have read my detailed updates on news Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Sci-Fi epic, Inception. For those who are new to The Movie Mash, or who don’t know, pre-production is currently underway on Inception, the movie that Nolan is doing with Warner Bros. before he will inevitably return to complete his brilliant Batman trilogy. After dabbling with neo-noir thrillers and superhero blockbusters, Nolan is about give his first stab at Science Fiction.
The Calgary Sun reported today that their Hollywood source is telling them that WB is giving Nolan $200 million to make Inception. The Calgary Sun is the paper with the inside info. because they reported spotting Nolan scouting locations in the Alberta, Canada foothills, shown in the beautiful picture that I’ve provided for you above. That is quite a chunk of change considering a couple reasons: 1) The Dark Knight “only” cost $185 million and Batman has an already massively established fan-base 2) Inception is a completely original Sci-Fi story which Nolan wrote himself. So WB is putting a lot of faith into this man to create an original action blockbuster; a show of faith that I BELIEVE will woo him into coming back for Batman 3. The article states that Inception “will employ hundreds, if not thousands, of local film workers starting this summer when construction on the elaborate set is due to begin.”This movie is a big deal people.
To go along with this massive budget and pre-production that hints at a huge action blockbuster, the film also boasts one of the best ensemble casts in recent memory. This ridiculous cast includes: Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Marion Cotlliard, Cillian Murphy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Caine and Ken Watanabe. I mean is that not the coolest, most badass completion of actors you’ve ever heard of?! AND THIS IS AN ACTION FILM! What’s also great about this, is that even with the announcements of the great cast and huge dollars involved, there is very little known on what the film is actually about. When Inception was first announced, the brief synopsis of the film described it as being “a Sci-Fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind.” Whaaaaaa? So is this “elaborate set” employing possibly thousands of people taking place in someone’s head? That is truly epic!
To shed some light on the secrecy of this project, the brilliantly talented Joseph Gordon-Levitt (JGL, who is one of my favorite actors and can also be seen this summer in G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra & 500 Days of Summer) told MTV a little bit about his feelings on being involved with this film, saying:
“Here’s the thing, I cant wait to talk to you about ["Inception"] but I’ve been very specifically asked not to talk about it. I want to respect [director Chris Nolan's wishes] because I love his movies and I’m so honored and grateful to be working with him.”
He also said that there is a specific reason for all this secrecy saying: “He’s (Nolan) got a really specific idea and way he wants people to be presented with this thing.” So I’m thinking that we won’t see anything definitive about this film until the first trailer, which I think would come out around Christmas time (say attached to Warner’s Sherlock Holmes poss?). And it would also seem that this attempt to keep things secret will be a lot easier filming in the mountains of Canada, far away from paparazzi and reporters, something that wasn’t so easy to to control filming TDK in downtown Chicago.
So needless to say, because I’ve said it before, but this is my absolute, #1 most-anticipated film of next year. I just don’t know what I’m going to do until Inception drops worldwide on July 16, 2010. Christopher Nolan redefined the superhero blockbuster with The Dark Knight and I have a sneaking suspicion that he’ll do the same thing to Sci-Fi blockbusters with Inception.
Are you not just retardedly excited for this movie? Or is it just me?
