Rant: Jerry SUCKheimer’s “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” goes toe-to-toe with Nolan’s “Inception”
ByLet me give a little back story on this whole deal. When it was announced by Warner Bros. a month ago that Christopher Nolan was going to take a break between The Dark Knight and “Batman 3″ and direct another movie, I was relieved. Comic-book movies are so profitable now, studios are trying to get them out ASAP. But Nolan is an auteur, a true filmmaker who does not bend to the will of the suit and he actually writes the scripts for the movies he directs; which only a handful do now days.
While Warner Bros. would have loved for him to jump on “Batman 3” right after the Oscars, they instead allowed him to broaden his artistic horizons by green-lighting his next film and his first attempt at science fiction titled Inception. The film is described as “a sci-fi-actioner set within the architecture of the mind” THAT NOLAN WROTE and just signed Leonardo DiCaprio to take the lead role.
I mean how bad-ass is that? Nolan and Leo? TOGETHER?!?! There are no words to describe the awesomeness. They then set the release date for July 16, 2010…the same day as Marvel Studios was set to release Thor, their new superhero-slated flick. Marvel just announced last week a long-term strategy to create quality in their upcoming superhero flicks by taking their time (aka doing what Nolan did with TDK). So Thor is now pushed back a year later to 2011. So Inception was all by itself on July 16, set to dominate the box-office and Nolan would score for WB again, right?
DAMN YOU NIC CAGE AND SUCKHEIMER!

If you haven’t noticed by now Disney has a two-way freakfest going on with mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer (behind such gems like Armageddon, Con Air and the Pirates franchise), because he can take family-friendly properties, whore them out with explosions, cheesy one-liners and yes NICHOLAS CAGE!!
So that brings us to today. Disney is making a live-action film based off of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice from Fantasia and guess who is producing? Bruckheimer. Guess who is starring? Cage. Guess when the release date is? JULY 16, 2010!
Now obviously there’s always competition at the box-office now days, since they release like 20 movies a week, but the fact that a mind-numbing, explosion whore like Bruckheimer is going to take away potential cash money from an actual film maker like Christopher Nolan because every parent in America is going to take Timmy & Sally enrages me. I don’t know, am I way off or do I make some points?
What do you think? Discuss.
